I am quite skeptical about this, I don't think Nokia is going to unlock the bootloader of Nokia 8 Sirocco anytime soon. I don't know what's the hold up.

    Thanks, that's a shame.

I'm new to Nokia phones and was happy to know they'd started listening to requests. It might be a somewhat niche market, but courting the dev scene always gets you a following/recommendations with android.

Even if there is a bigger focus on security/locking down android these days.

Seems someone has found a way to unlock the Sirocco - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78155356&postcount=5

    Cmon Nokia, it shouldn't be down to 3rd party/paid options - https://www.techmesto.com/buy-nokia-bootloader-unlock-key/

    (Sirocco isn't supported above, yet)

Look how dead XDA is for this device. As I said above while the dev scene might not equal hundreds of thousands of sales, courting them at least gets your device known as a dev friendly phone. More sales!

With this being Android One and supporting Project Treble it could have some life born again into it as a dev friendly phone.

Maybe once the Nokia 9 comes out and replaces this as Nokia's flagship, they'll add it to the Nokia 8 as being unlockable.

Well I think that's a fake, the one in the xda forum. There is a comment just above your comment saying that. Yes only if Nokia had unlocked the bootloader of all their devices at the time of launch of the device the whole scenario would have been different. We would be seeing bunch of custom roms and tweaks for all the devices. I think Developers won't invest their time much even if the bootloader for the old phones is unlocked now.

Ah good catch, I just noticed it says "unlocker".

User has posted another image, but these could just be static images displaying on the screen. Grrr.

Unlike the Nokia 8, this is a treble phone, so we can flash GSI images. Generic rooting can be fun anyway for Xposed/Magisk addons/font & graphics customizations/etc.

I replied to this but reply seemed to go missing lol.

I just added the poster has now put up an Xposed image, but they could be static fakes. The "unlocker" text is suspicious.

Remember this phone is Treble supported, so GSI images can be flashed :)

I really hope they add the Sirocco to the their unlockable device list since as you told there has been quite a talk on Google about GSI and Android Q being available much earlier with this.

Seems like this is real - http://tieba.baidu.com/p/5953175199

Need a proper translation but right now Google Translate suggests its sadly not as easy as the other Nokia unlocks you can pay $5 for and receive a .bin unlock file :(

Yup it seems really hard and I don't want to risk my device. I will wait for the official bootloader unlocker even if I think it won't happen for a long long time.

I spoke to the creator on telegram, the unlock is now released - https://hikaricalyx.com/product/nokia-8-sirocco-bootloader-unlock/

    Requires remote access.

Same dev who has unlocked the other devices, but up to you if you want to go through with this.
  • @juho I really would prefer not to spend 7$ and really hope you are on this, thanks!

My Sirocco is coming tomorrow, thought I'd have had it yesterday.

I'll let you know how I get on, but yeah, HMD almost "forcing" their userbase to go to paid 3rd party options is really poor.

I don't blame those that have to spend many hours looking for ways to unlock/making custom software to do it charging a relatively small fee. We don't have anywhere near a good level of developer support for any Nokia phone, and that is simply on HMD.

Look at the XDA forums for the Nokia 8, the one device with an official bootloader unlock. It's still dead. HMD waited too long.

If they wanted to grow their brand and not act so skittish/paranoid about security they'd behave like every other manufacturer and offer warranty voiding bootloader unlocks for ALL models.

Seems like HMD is full of corporate red tape and a complete misjudgement of how much the dev scene can help grow your brand and create more hardware sales. Even in India which is a popular outlet for mid-range Nokia phones. Many there would love bootloader unlock options as there are lots of talented devs in India.
  • In the end it is my device so I should decide how to deal with it. Warranty lost? Okay tharst sucks but hey still my decision.

Just want to add I was the first TA-1005 device unlocked. The Sirocco's before mine were the Chinese variant.

Process went smoothly. It's a bit complicated hence why remote access is required. Took about 10 mins all in.

Anyway, I grabbed the OTA files and have posted the boot.imgs from each. Someone in a dev community did a quick TWRP port as well and I tested it works - https://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-8-sirocco/development/download-links-ota-boot-files-sirocco-t3872936

Cmon HMD, do an official bootloader unlock and start releasing your firmwares like Google/Samsung do.

Official bootloader unlock would indeed be great!
  • If you turn on developers mode, a new menu appers. There is a bootloader unlock menu. Is this what we are looking for?

Since the Bootloader unlock is available again, I tried to get the unlock key for my Sirocco. I received it, so it should work. but, when I send the command, it throws an error and it doesn't unlock the device 😫.

Maybe some of you can try it and share your experiences.
