Lock screen from power button is blank

The documentation says the power button turns on the lock screen.  When I push the power button, the screen turns off and I get no notifications - neither icons, words, or lights.  If I double-tap or press power again, then I get the lock screen that shows this stuff.  Can someone explain the two seemingly different lock screens?  If I don't want the screen to go off and I just want to lock, what are the correct steps?

Additional info: I just saw that if I stare straight on at the phone, after a bit it shows the lock screen I'm looking for.  But it takes longer than if I just press the power button.  I need to be able to glance at the phone where it's lying on the desk and see if there are notifications.  On my Galaxy S5, that I replaced, I would get a light at the top, and I could even set the color for different apps.
