I also had problems with the compass after I upgraded to pie. It was 180 degrees wrong and recalibrating did not help in any way. Also tried multiple apps which claimed they could solve the problem (not!). After downgrading to Oreo the compass worked immediately again. I hope they will solve this problem soon!
Also broken on TA-1052 all compass and stargazing apps with compass support are broken. "Sensoren Multitool" by weRed Software reports constant good magnetometer date, but the compass flipps around and is even reacting to horizontal orientation.
This bug may literally cost lives, i wouldn't be surprised if people around the world would get lost in the outdoors with the compass on their phones as the only navigation tool... They shouldn't be that poorly equipped in the first place, but things happen.
I think the severity of this bug should be rather high and get proper attention. Let's try to find the bug report on Google's issue tracker and vote for it accordingly

I just had to recalibrate it and it worked like expected.
2. The window opens and click Compass Calibration on the bottom left.
