My Nokia 3.1 is stuck in a boot loop after a recent software update to 8.1.0. This has happened twice, and if it's not a bad luck, the only common thing during both times have been an encryption enabled through settings. Is there any way to solve this problem by myself, or my only option is to visit Nokia Care?

  • It seems I have exactly the same issue on a new device I purchased as a Christmas present, worked perfectly until the pending Android 8.1 update was applied. Very disappointed!

Have tried a factory reset to no avail, the phone simply boot loops to the "Android One" splash screen

Trying to find a 3.1 Android 8.0 rom to flash

Did you make sure you had the usb charging cable in ? I'm sure it only goes to the recovery and wiping options if it's plugged in , I could be wrong of course.

I've never had a boot loop myself so not totally sure how best to fix it, but my only option because I never have much saved or installed is wipe it , I've wiped mine at least 4 times in as many months because of strange lagging between menu swipes

Same here. I'm looking for a ROM as well, because it looks like this isn't likely to stop, ever. The same happened when there was a security patch, and now with this v8.1.0 update. I would love it if Nokia brings back Nokia Suite, because it took care of these things very nicely.

Yes, I've tried everything and nothing is working. The boot loop is there, looping at Android One logo, and there's nothing that I'm able to do. No recovery, no wipe options.
The worst thing, there is no stock ROM available, or an easy way to flash a stock ROM.
  • Have a look on Google for "Nokia Online Service Tool"

It might do what you need.

Thanks, will try that. Still sad to see no official method of doing this (specially when your software is supposed to be open). But OST needs firmware files, or some sort of other file. Where do I get that from? Can't find anything for Nokia 3.1

I remember my Samsung's using the built in Odin software to flash fresh firmware from sammobile website.

So I got my phone fixed from Nokia Care, and after getting it back I tried to update it to Android v8.1.0 via OTA again, and to no surprise, my phone was stuck in a boot loop again. Not it's not just frustrating anymore. It's annoying. Looks like I have received a faulty hardware, or looks like Nokia QC isn't doing a great job at making sure that the software gets installed nicely. Either way, it needs to be fixed. I bought this phone 4 months ago, and this is just insane that I'm having the same problem every time.
  • Bought a new Nokia 3.1. First Software update - initially failed multiple times and then it went into boot loop. Was not able to use the new phone for even 2 days.
  • This is really a crash! I don't know if you have solved this problem by contacting Nokia after-sales service. I have to say that the Android boot loop problem is very common in Android devices. You usually use recovery mode and CWM to solve it. If you still haven't solved the problem, I would suggest you give it a try like this:
Press and hold the power button simultaneously, the volume up button and the Home button > Open CWM Recovery Mode > Use the Volume Down button to select the Advanced option, press the Power button to confirm > Erase Dalvik Cache > Back > Mounts and Storage > Wipe / Cache > Return to the home page of recovery mode > "Restart system now" > Finish.

Hey guys, I'm really sorry I haven't been checking this forum anymore.

Some of you have asked me if I got any resolution to this problem, well the short answer is - No.

I visited Nokia Care a couple of times, and they restored it to previous version which worked. But every attempt at updating it to the latest update, bricked the device.

Nokia Care executives asked me to not update the phone as the update isn't stable. Beats the purpose of having an Android One phone for me. Sadly, I had to ditch that phone because despite asking Nokia for a proper fix, I was pretty unhappy with the "no response" policy. That dumb phone is now rotting away in some shelf in my house.

I'm sorry, I know you guys were looking for a solution, but I gave up on it months ago. I don't have the patience to deal with such a customer support where despite almost 2 years, I'm assuming users are still facing this issue.

Sucks, but the Nokia we used to know is dead for me.

  • I am facing same issue of Boot loop last week i visited Nokia service centre(Sec 10 Noida) and they also not able to fix this issue looks lack of competency and asked me to submit so that they can check in details, in just 30 minute i left from centre they send me quote of 9K INR stating motherboard need to be changed ..looks strange for such software bug these beggars are asking huge amount which they know no one will be agree. I am very disappointed with NOKIA service, if anyone here know the solution please respond. Thanks

Hey, it doesn't look like it's got anything to do with the motherboard. I'd ask you to visit some other Nokia Care and get their opinion.

  • i too have same problem. Damn it.

  • Hi there! I had the same thing happen to my phone after an OTA update to Android 10. After restarting to complete the installation, it failed to boot and was stuck in a boot loop. I tried installing every firmware that I could find for it to no avail. However, I managed to fix it using the Active slot switching method in the following article using ADB and fastboot commands on a windows 10 laptop. Check this article:

Use the 4th method. It brought my phone back to life miraculously just as I was about to give up.

As for the people who are looking for firmware versions for the phone. Check this website and you will find all of them from Android 8 up to the lastest Android 10 update.

This actually looks like a method that might work. Bummer that it took years to find a resolution for this particular problem faced by many.

I've moved on from Nokia to another phone, but hopefully this helps someone still owning the phone. Thanks for sharing

I'm going to take Nokia to court over this because I had similar issues with TWO of these. In fact I could never get one of them to update at all, I just got an "Update failed" message every time and Nokia couldn't/wouldn't do anything to help. Later, that phone got stuck in the startup loop and the same happened to the second one a few weeks later. I tried a Nokia service centre and they couldn't do anything with it and Nokia refused to help, despite many replies with "Don't worry, we'll sort it" sort of messages.

My last message was "sort it or I'm filing a claim in the Small Claims Court" (UK) and they completely ignored me. To have TWO brand new phones that were clearly faulty within weeks of purchase is not acceptable. I've now sent them an invoice and if they don't pay I'm filing the claim. If more people did this companies would stop fobbing us off. I'll never buy Nokia again, specs were garbage compared to many others in a similar price range anyway.
