Wow Great Job @Audioboxer. Those who don't have patience anymore waiting for Pie will surely find this fruitful. 😀

Has this any negative side effect on later OTA upgrades?

No, it's the same OTA everyone will get via the system. Because my device is unlocked and rooted I am able to grab the update zip off the system partition.

OTA is the same worldwide, HMD are just rolling it out in stages which is why there is a delay for some.

Just what internal storage is referred to. Root is called /sdcard
  • Thank you very much for your work, because thanks to your work, I have android 9 on my phone. Things like this, make this forum great.

I've just done this for my sirocco, UK, unlocked, with an O2 simcard, took about 20mins from starting the update to rebooting back in. The Nokia logo stayed on screen for aaaggeesss but eventually went through BUT can't disable the stupid Google search bar at the bottom, what a joke! Don't want it don't need it it's just sat there taking up screen space, thanks to audioboxer for posting the file

Everybody has this problem with Pie. The blame of this goes to Google which has forced this. Your only solution is to use a 3rd party launcher app. I use Nova launcher :)
  • Thanks. Updated to pie without any problems

  • Works perfectly with the manual update, so easy... Thx!

It's actually asks to confirm before the install that your phone is rooted and any OTA can't be guaranteed anymore.
I guess, I will wait a bit to receive it in a normal way.
  • Is this safe?
  • Before, with Oreo, the battery life was very good, but with Pie is fantastic. Very well polished is update.
  • Is this safe?
Yes, it's the same OTA file that will be delivered to your phone once rollout happens for you.

It's encrypted and signed, so there is no way to edit it or change it and sign it again. Only HMD can do that.

then why phone asks to confirm that phone will be rooted?

I think that it is safe but I don't want to loose ota, I guess I'll wait to get the update so my phone would remain pristine. HMD chat support is awful as ****. One guy told me that there is no Android 9 for Sirocco before I gave him a tweet from Juho, then he just copied the tweet as a response for my question

Will installing this root my device?
I have no faintest idea, but when I put this archive on my phone, before install it asked me to confirm that phone will be rooted and there is no guarantee to receive further ota updates. So I did not confirm and didn't install anything
  • No, phone remain stock, without root.

On German Language Phone it dit not say anything about root. It just asked if one wants to upgrade and that one should do a data backup, because there is a slight risk of user data being lost in the upgrade process.
I upgradet my phone just fine and it works flawlessly and no sign of root or lost warranty.
  • Also my sirocco works fine with manual Pie. No root.

  • Mine, that is not rooted, (And i dont want to root it) says something like....
"The normal update can not be guaranteed after the device is rooted. If root contributes to abnormal user on the device in update process, the user should be responsible for it onself"
Aparently, it´s going to root it....

No, it's not. That's just a warning message/disclaimer IF you root the phone normal updates might not work. It's a standard message. Nothing to worry about. You're seeing that disclaimer and checkbox just because you're triggering the update manually off the sdcard, rather than from the OTA menu.

Again, this is an untouched OTA, it will not root your device (the device cannot be rooted without an unlocked bootloader) and OTAs will work as normal. January security update and so on.

It's the exact same file the system update will use once it's pushed to your region. No pressure for anyone to install it, just providing it because regional rollouts can take a bit of time for some.

I don't get it. Just downloaded the file. Should I unzip it and how I do that? Reboot now is not leading to an update.

Don't unzip. Just place on the root of the internal storage and reboot.

No do not unzip, just place the zip-file into the root folder of the internal space. After reboot it did take 30 seconds then a message came up and telling me that an upgrade was found and if you would like to install.

I did, but the only thing I see is that my system is up to date....
