If you have a Netflix subscription that supports HD playback a good way to test this is by using their Test Patterns video.

On my Nokia 6 2017 the highest resolution I get is 960x540, my Galaxy S6 gets full 1080p. If Netflix has to certify individual devices for HD support, is this something that HMD is planning to do?

Nokia 8 had netflix in HD before the android pie update, they are however not going to restore widevine l1 to it according to a nokia employee I talked with during the weekend.

This issue seems to happen regardless of Widevine support, the Nokia 6 supports it for example. The only way to confirm if playback is actually 1080p is to let the Test Patterns video play for a few seconds.
  • No nokia 8 not support hd playback in netfNet and Amazon prime

I'm seriously considering rooting and downgrading to a official nokia 8 oreo 8.1 but I am wondering if it would restore widevine l1 to the phone and wether it would once again show netflix in HD-

I doubt it given Netflix's apparent device whitelist for HD playback but someone with a Nokia 8 on Oreo can confirm.

It would also be nice to get someone from HMD to comment on this. cc @HMD_Laura @juho

The best thing is to raise the issue directly with support: https://www.nokia.com/phones/locale/support
If enough people complain then it might get fixed in a future update (not that much gets fixed).
