Tips and tricks for the Nokia stock camera (version 86.9.1130.21)

Lots of people on this forum are dissatisfied with the standard camera app and turn towards Gcam (I too use Gcam). But I would really like to collect all sorts of useful tips and tricks for the stock camera because the official manual by Nokia is not only very basic but also outdated.

Lots of people on this forum are dissatisfied with the standard camera app and turn towards Gcam (I too use Gcam). But I would really like to collect all sorts of useful tips and tricks for the stock camera because the official manual by Nokia is not only very basic but also outdated. Some users on this forum already posted some interesting tips on various threads in this forum:

1
Bug - double icons in the viewer
Solution: Settings app - View - Advanced - Display size - Standard
2
Focus
Tap the place in the screen that you want to focus.
Note: you have to take the photo very quickly, after 3 seconds the focus is back in the middle of the photo.
3
Moving objects indoors and sports
Long press for burst - select the best photo later.
Activate this function via the settings (the hamburger menu in the viewer)
Shutter control (Long press to take action shots): ON
4
Pro Mode
Activate via the hamburger menu.
In portrait mode you can also activate the pro function with a swipe upwards on the shutter button. You can return to the auto function with a swipe down on the shutter button.

Night photography
- Focus: infinite
- ISO: 100
fireworks: 200 or 400 (background = dark)
- shutter speed: 1/2 sec.

Little light
PRO mode
- flash: switch off
- ISO: 1600,
- shutter speed: 1/2

Thank you: Petrus - user1536323754226 - user389 -martinfd
Hopefully lots of users can share other tips and tricks for the stock camera here?

For example in auto mode I use these settings (in Viewer):
Double - Single-sided - HDR - (Flash off)
+ Gridlines - activate via the settings (the hamburger menu in the viewer)

(Excuse me if I use the wrong terminology, I use Google translate)

@jdan : Thanks also from me!
@ all : Does any of you know what the "Beautify" (Verschönern) function really does?

Following number 2 also sets the exposure for the scene as well as the focus, this is how i have always used the camera app from day one and as i have said many times the results aren't that bad at all (apart from low light)

Maybe this is also useful (especially for video) : Save to internal storage since slow sd card will impact quality.
You can move files to sd easily afterwards using Google Files  app.

Beautify removes skin blemishes and applies skin smoothing to make you look like a plastic doll with no pores.

@mrbelter : Ah, okay - thanks! Of course I don't photograph people with such blemishes, so I haven't been able to use this function yet ... :p

I have made a short manual on the stock camera app in Dutch. Click here and use Google Translate to read in your own language. If you have other tips or find mistakes post them here, please.

@jdan many thanks for the effort, that's thousands times better than whatever tutorial or manual HMD offers!

With your permission I'll write the URL to your tutorial in clear here, as your link could be easily overlooked (too great of a resource):

@jdan Thanks for that initiative. And thanks to the rest of you for your input. @ Mr Belter - so that's why my shots of trees didn't show improvements!

Very nice indeed! Does Google do an okay job from Dutch to English? Danish to English is absolute rubbish.

On my web page I now have a few more photos taken by the stock camera app ...
    + tip on zoom.
The site has now a Google Translate widget (on phones at the bottom of the pages.)

@jdan Wow thanks for taking your time to write all this in one place. Sorry, I missed this post somehow. I learned some new things about the stock camera from this post and also from the link to your article . I will be sure to recommend this to other users.

I added a short description for the Pro camera to my manual.
And I corrected the tip on how to use the burst function (this function cannot be used with the volume ****).
    https://mijnnokia.wordpress.com/2019/01/29/fotos-tips/
(Google Translate button on the site)

    Bonus:
Three pictures taken with the Nokia standard camera yesterday evening.
Settings: Twin - HDR - No flash - No focus compensation. Burst function used on one photograph to compensate for moving cars. Not on the other one because it would then look as if it was not moving.
Photos are on my site or click on these direct links on my Flickr site:

    Another update ...

I explored Live Bokeh and wrote a short manual with pictures.
(I must say that it may perhaps be better not to use it as it turns off HDR - see my examples. I would recommend to use HDR + manual focus.)

I also found out that the present camera app of Nokia 8 very much resembles the one of Nokia 7 (in July) and looking on the Internet, I have found a very interesting series of tips for the Pro camera. Link to that video on my website too!
(Guess what: also this video starts with recommending to use HDR!)

Having found out how awful the translation of Google really is, I have made an English version of my manual of the standard camera. I hope it can inspire lots of forum members to shoot nice photographs!

@jdan your blog post is a great manual! Thank you

I really hope that HMD address your well written point about manuals which you wrote in the AMA thread (if they ever actually release the video, having made it).

Your post also reinforces the point that HMD should make every effort to merge all the different variants of the camera app so that a single, excellent, manual can be written for using all of them (albeit noting where some features are not available on some models).

    Thanks again

HMD were there and tried that - the October 2018 mess, remember?
I'd rather have the original first 'Nougat' camera version back, but that's probably just me!

@user389 you mean when we all got a camera we shouldn't have had? :D
A single UI style would help a lot with actually tracking problems, e.g. between 8 and 7+ we have different bugs, but it's not clear if they're UI bugs or something else.

I remember Nougat being less buggy. However not necessarily better overall. I think if you want to unlock your boot loader you can go back to Nougat with help from Hikari Calyx: https://fih-firmware.hikaricalyx.com/index_en.html

I do not even remember how the camera application was in Android 7.  :D

I've remembered something important about my memories! I got my 8 after the Androi 8.0 update was released, so it immediately updated to 8.0 and I never tried the camera app on 7.1. My memories of some things working better in the old app are actually from the Android 8.0/8.1 version pre-Pro update.

Another update to my manual ... this maybe something everybody on this forum knows, but still it wasn't written down yet.
Front and rear cameras automatically detect and focus on faces – see the sort of square(s) in the viewfinder. Nice to shoot pictures of persons and selfies that way!

(According to gadgetsnow Nokia 8.1 doesn't have face detection nor touch to focus, don't know if that is correct.)
