Brand New Nokia 7.1 Will Not Download Security Updates Beyond September 2018

I bought a Nokia 7.1 a few days ago since it is an Android One device and decided to move away from Motorola after 8 years of being a loyal customer. I noticed that my Nokia 7.1 Android Security Update was listed as September 2018, so I chatted with Tech Support. Not only did the agent not know how to allow a user to clear the cache with hardware buttons, they didn't even know how to get to the bootloader screen so I can do so.

After reviewing some YouTube videos, I was finally able to figure it out on my own. So at this point, and in the past 3 days, I have performed 2 manual hardware hard reset (set up as new phone), 6 software hard resets to original factory settings (set up as a new phone), cleared my cache, tried to update with and without 4g LTE enabled and disabled, over WiFi enabled and without, and checked for update manually about 20+ times manually under the phone settings.

Is anyone else having Android Security Update issues? I have checked and Nokia's website and they released the Feb 2019 update a week ago, but I am not getting anything from October 2018 moving forward either (and no Android Pie update yet). Again, I purchased this device because I have always loved my Nokia Windows Phones (used for Business reasons) and they have always been stellar in product design and support.

Now I am starting to regret switching from Motorola to Nokia for my Android experience needs. My Motorola update experience (non-Android One devices) in the past has been better than expected, and even updated to the latest software over WiFi without a Sim card installed.

Add another to the list then. I'm also stuck on Sept 1st 2018 sucurity update on Android 8.1. Won't see any updates.

Funney enough I upgraded to the 7.1 after getting Android 9 on my Nokia 6. I was so surprised to get it and the phone served me so well. But oddly enough the Nokia 7.1 needs to go on the shelf until this issue is figured out :(

What service provider you have? Mr. Ross and I are both on T-Mobile. It could have something to do with how it's being distributed. Kinda like being on a waiting list.
  • I'm also experiencing the same exact nightmare!  I'm in the USA on Straight Talk with an AT&T sim.  Tried all found suggestions with no luck!  With or without sim, this phone will NOT update!
  • I have T-Mobile, and I've tried using my friend's SIM card, which is on a different network. Still no luck.

Same Problem over here in Switzerland with Salt SIM.

Same problem in Croatia, with or without SIM card.
  • I am on AT&T in the US. I finally called AT&T tech support, and the agent really did do everything he could to resolve the issue, but Nokia hasn't sent them ANY OF THE UPDATES, which means Nokia is responsible to send out the updates directly to the handsets themselves. I have had other branded Unlocked devices that updated without a sim card installed over WiFi. I was actually going to buy a Nokia with the 5 cameras for my other line since it's now available. Not anymore. I'm actually going to take this one back today and go with Motorola again. Good luck to you all.
  • Same problem. I bought Nokia 7.1 yesterday having build "00WW_2_56A", model TA-1097 and Android 8.1. Android Security patch level is done on 1 September 2018. I am not receiving any Android security update and Android 9 pie update. Tried factory reset. Not getting any update notification. Please share details if you are able to do update after configuration changes.
  • Same situation here. Bought in Denmark and running on Telmore/TDC network. I'll give it a few more days but if there is no luck within a week or so I will be returning the device. I switched from a Huawei device to this because of lack in updates... And now this - hehe go figure! 😒

Same situation with myself in UK....perhaps someone from Nokia would explain what has happened for so many people to have encountered this problem.

<div>Patience please. They have been by far the best at issuing updates to ALL their devices compared to all their competitors. Just because a few dud phones aren't working doesn't mean their neglecting you. The problem will get fixed im sure. Plenty of people confirm that the 7.1 is running on Android 9

</div><div>My model is the TA-1085. Hardware version 3.0. Supposedly the international version. I'm in the USA. I've also noticed that my phone spelling Aeroplane mode, which is making me think it could be a European model instead.

I spoke to Nokia support over chat and they were no help at all. They could not confirm that my phone would ever get Pie, and all they could say was check for updates every day. They admitted that they were a long way from this market and didn't know anything at all about it. That is not acceptable in my view, and the phone is going back to Best Buy tomorrow.
  • Perhaps when the next OTA comes out (security patch), we'll get our updates.

It just doesn't make sense that my phone updated immediately upon start up to pie, and my Husband's did not, I am so frustrated

We're 6 months behind on security updates, so it seems worse than just a slight backlog situation. I have no confidence at all that this phone will ever get an update (please prove me wrong, somebody!), which makes it useless to use or sell.

I would try to pull the sim card reboot the phone and then try to manually update.

You have to download the OTA and either sideload it via ADB or reboot into recovery and update it from there. The official Pie OTA is hard to find and keeps throwing errors upon installation, at least for me.
  • It's coming guys. Just be patient. I manually checked, and it gave me the update.

My husband got the update on his phone tonight as well.
  • I officially took back my Nokia 7.1 yesterday to Best Buy. The young lady who helped me immediately said, "These are being returned like wildfire" as soon as took the device out of the bag. Got a Moto Z3 with a free battery mod for $350 (originally $499 but she priced matched it for me from Amazon). As soon as I got home and connected the Moto to WiFi, my updates came pouring in. Goodbye Nokia. May you be as successful as the customer service you give your customers.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Patience is key my friend. I finally got the update tonight. My 7.1 is on Pie now. It was just a brief hickup we all got caught in as it's a recent issue apparently. What good timing to buy a 7.1 eh?

My two years of being a Nokia user I am incredibly impressed that my original Nokia 6, two years old now, is even on Pie and was getting monthly sucurity updates prior. Motorola has come a long way yes but their still far from perfect. In a nutshell their both about the same, I just prefer much better build quality over saving a few dollars IMO.

Plus, what two year old phones still gets updates this late? XD
