Hi all, let's set the Nokia 2 Free! 😃
As you probably know, the Nokia 2 has received its last official updates from HMD. This means that, even if you bought your Nokia 2 less than two years ago*, it won't get any more updates.
This means that owners of that phone have a choice to either buy another phone which will have up-to-date security or keep their Nokia 2 and accept the security risks. This is not a straightforward choice for many people because many people cannot afford to buy a new phone or even a second-hand one - not to mention the environmental impact of throwing away a perfectly functioning phone just because the manufacturer decides to stop maintaining the software for it.
So what can we do? The best thing that HMD can do for these customers is to provide an official way for them to unlock the bootloader so that they can easily install a custom OS which can be kept up-to-date by the volunteer developer community.** So:
*Which you might have done, as the Nokia 2 was not released in some markets until 2020: https://community.phones.nokia.com/discussion/54145/petition-continue-nokia-2-security-updates-until-2-years-from-the-time-last-market-launched
**I know that this capability is not a certainty, but with a bootloader unlock there might be more interest, especially since these phones are well-known for their durability and are very affordable now. Maybe postmarketOS could be a good option
