[Tips and Tricks] Mobile sustainability
This past month we've been busy working towards a more sustainable future with the launch of our Nokia X10 and Nokia X20 devices. Both phones come with a future-fresh 3-year warranty, 3 years of solid updates, and our clever compostable case.
However, we know that stepping towards a more sustainable future is not exclusive to these devices, and that’s why we’ve put together some useful tips we can all follow while using our phones 🤳.
Turn off your device if you’re not using it
Our phones play an essential part in our lives and it’s something we use for many hours every day. That’s why it’s important for us to turn them off every now and again to help the longevity of the battery’s health.
By keeping them on during periods we’re not using them we increase the need to charge our phones more frequently. This means longer charging cycles and a shorter device life spans.
So, the next time you go to sleep or hop on a long flight, consider switching your phone off.
Charge your phone in small and regular top-ups
Just as our compostable case will help protect your phone from bumps and scratches, there are a few things you can do to make sure that you’re looking after your phone's battery. One of them being charging your phone in small and regular top-ups.
If you are keen on keeping your battery living for as long as possible, you should keep its charge between 20 and 80 per cent instead of waiting for the battery to die before charging it for a long period of time.
Don’t charge your phone whilst gaming or watching videos.
We know that for most of us our phones are a source of endless entertainment that is only limited by how long our battery lasts. So it seems quite intuitive to keep bingeing on your favourite show whilst your phone is charging.
But by doing that, you’re decreasing the lifespan of your phone and in some cases, causing your phone to overheat.
When your battery is low consider taking a digital detox for a few moments. It’s not only good for you but great for your battery’s health.
Have you got any tips about ways you can be more sustainable with your Nokia device? Let us know comments below, we are always looking for ways to ensure our steps towards the future are a little greener 🌱

Sustainable design - the key features for sustainable phones are: use of sustainable and recycled materials, the use of less energy and efficient charging, durability, and last but not least they should be easy and inexpensive to repair. ... The more materials are recovered and reused from recycling, the more sustainable.
Because so much of the carbon footprint associated with a phone is the result of how it is manufactured, the most sustainable phones on the market are used ones. Passing along a phone reduces its carbon impact. ... eBay, Craigslist, and Facebook are good sources for used or refurbished phones.
Among all the devices, trends suggest that by 2020, the most damaging devices to the environment are smartphones. While smartphones consume little energy to operate, 85% of their emissions impact comes from production. ... Also, it's not sustainable to have a two-year subsidized plan for smartphones.”
Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources, we also need social and economic resources. Sustainability is not just environmental- ism.

Tip for OLED screen smartphones. Infelicitously not for new Nokia smartphones
😔
For LCD screens solutions is dimming screen and choice modern LCD technology like LTPO, LTPS (relatively low temperatures in process production-save energy), IGZO (low temperature production), S-IPS, miniLED (not available for smartphones yet) etc., but better is jump to OLED family displays and in future to microLED technology.
Plug out charger if battery in smartphone is full of charge and do not leave charger in electrical socket.
Especially a tablet Nokia T20

"Charger no-load power consumption: <=10 W" 😯
Normal Nokia smartphone charger plug on to wall socket and charger no-load power consumption is <0.1W
