Nokia XR20 – Military strength, artistically crafted
The Nokia XR20 is one good-looking, tough, long-lasting smartphone. The casing is made to military standards MIL-STD-810H, and the screen is our toughest glass yet. So, you can drop it, get it wet, and even record your kid’s football game in the roughest weather – if it gets dirty, you can just clean it with soap and water.
Safe and secure
We keep our lives on our phones. So, we have to trust that what’s in there stays private. The Nokia XR20 comes with monthly security updates for 4-years – so, you can keep your hopes, dreams, ideas, pictures, notes, schedules and emails safe and secure for years to come. Sorry, hackers.
Stay updated. For years and years
The XR20 is built to survive - and that includes what’s on the inside as well. So, while it comes with the latest, fastest, most secure Android™11, it also comes with up to 3 years of OS upgrades and 4 years of monthly security updates, so your phone will be up to date into 2024.
The toughest of tough screens
This is our toughest screen yet – Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus™ stands out in sunlight and is strong enough to resist the whims of kids, the slobber of pets, as well as drops, scratches and even a little bit of water. It’s also sensitive enough to react to your touch, even with gloves on. And it comes as standard on XR20.
Capture life in the fast lane.
The Nokia XR20's 48MP and 13MP UW cameras with dedicated flashes are serious about capturing detail, regardless of the lighting condition. The new SpeedWarp mode with super-stabilization lets you fast forward to the key moments, while OZO spatial audio capture with wind-noise cancellation makes sure you capture only the sounds you want.
It’s OZO good
The XR20 dials up the audio with OZO Playback technology letting you experience every booming detail through the extra loud stereo speakers. So, you can surround yourself in out-of-this-world audio entertainment.

And here the NOKIA is back! a warm welcome to the new life-proof companion 😍
I want to ask one question to Petri Hayrynen
When will it come to India?🇮🇳
My question is to Adam Ferguson & Petri Hayrynen that what exactly are these new features Speedwarp and Action Cam in the camera department? & to Miika Mahonen that why there are such big bezels on the screen, is it just to line up with X20 or else?
So coooool
This is a big plus for Nokia. Nice design, truly Nokia XR20 is a well configured phone. I should have waited a little bit to buy this gem before buying Nokia X20. My question here is this, aside the ruggedness of XR20 what are the hidden features of XR20.
Same Question as @RajatParashari asked.
When will hit the Indian market?
Many are eagerly waiting to know the dates.
Does Nokia XR20 have cinema mode? Action mode? What's SpeedWarp?
Is 15th September Launch date in India as reported by few online portals ?
Does it have Stereo Speakers ?
I am a proud Nokia 7 Plus Owner using it for last 3 years. Due for a new phone. Would love to have my next phone with Stereo Speakers as I am a lover of Music and Photography. So Sound, Camera and of course Display are my primary considerations.
Once I heard about XR20 this is first in my list for the next phone if its reasonably and competitively priced in India. Hoping for the best.
@Nikhil.V so we'll expecting that this model will be limited in terms of availability to country or region? And this will be prioritize again in Indian Market?
Your comments/feedbacks is most appreciated.
-From Philippines Fans 🇵🇭
Hello everyone, good to see your questions coming in. We'd love to see more!
Send in your thoughts and queries soon; our team is eagerly waiting to answer them. 😀
You can't answer when we are gonna get A11...you and your "silent as a graveyard team" kept mute about it but here you are trying to interact with us all because you want to introduce or promote a new model to us...it's disheartening to know you guys can't be trusted anymore
My questions are:
a) What led you to believe a rugged-type phone was a viable product in the current market?
and
b) How did you balance the requirements of a rugged build with a more refined design and aesthetic?
Same Question as @RajatParashari asked.
When will it come to India? 🇮🇳
Hello team, nice device, really excited to see it and here go my choice of questions for all of you 😁
Hi, Adam Ferguson! How's the weather in London?
So.. last year, I read that you joined in as head of product marketing. Is it a typo that you're head of product management? Because.. I don't know if I should ask you something about marketing or about product although both can be interrelated?! I'll try to send product questions your way and marketing to Mr. Petri.
Why rugged? Why or from where did you get the idea of bringing in a rugged smartphone? Is it from marketing research i.e. a very possible market demand for devices that don't break easily? Do you see a gap in the market? Although Nokia has been known for durability, I do not think ruggedness has been their target market ever, so, why now?
How serious are you about rugged products? XR20 happened. Do you have a serious plan of doing more rugged smartphones? If yes, will they be limited to the X-series, or will we also see a rugged upgrade in other series, like for example a Nokia GR50 someday? Are you into make rugged devices a center of attraction of Nokia's portfolio?
Warranty.. Does that cover me if I accidentally damage my phone? I have already checked the Nokia.com webpage and there's a footer mention of a free screen replacement if the user breaks the display in the first year. Is it limited to select markets, and how about water damage? IP67, but what if the water does somehow get into my phone and damages it, do you have coverage for me?
And how about warranty repairs? I saw with the Nokia 8 Sirocco (and 9 PV) that HMD worked a warranty policy to only replace the devices if they get hardware damage (broken screen or malfunctioning MB) i.e. no repairs were done. For out-of-warranty repairs, the device was still replaced with a refurbished unit for a fixed fee. What is the care warranty policy for the XR20 like? Asking because naturally, a military-grade product is not easy to disassemble and assemble without compromising some of the water resistance or strength. And from my previous question, if my display breaks and I get a free display replacement from hmd, will my phone be still be adhering to IP67, or I should be worried?
Content partnerships...! I do not mind them, but where are we heading from those? I personally have always wanted some exclusives - some additional value that is delivered via some bundled offers. Still, to ask my question in full - Netflix, Express VPN, Spotify (you see it is so much better product than Google Podcasts)... What's next (I see Facebook apps and services having their stubs in the firmware of a number of other devices)? Are we going to head towards a bloated OS in the long run? Or.. will it be limited to a few high-quality apps? Are the apps user-removable? Will you add more apps with OS upgrades? Is it not the time to finally have a Nokia signature snake 🐍 game built into the phone too? 😍 Or.. can we also someday see native support for Amazon Alexa i.e. a system service that can allow Alexa to be invoked by voice when we install the Amazon Alexa app (OnePlus offers a setup like this even if Google Assistant is the default). You see, I am excited about the partnerships, but I am also worried at the same time because I do not want junk such as those news apps or those sending unwanted spam notifications).
Customizable button! You have finally done it - a button that's there to do what we want in a single press. But.. why on the top and not at a handy place like where the Google Assistant button is? The top placement makes it more left out for emergency/SOS usage than something that can be handy for daily usage. Also, can we get rid of the Google Assistant button or at least have it customizable in future devices? I mean if there can be a switch to turn off the Google Assistant button, why not an option to choose what it does? There are literally 3+ easy-to-use ways to invoke the assistant already (swipe up from either bottom edge, the bar on the home screen, OK Google - voice), but there's no easy way to turn on the torch when needed). (Yes, I am not quite a fan of the assistant button. I press it mistakenly more number of times than when I actually need it).
Faster time to market is something I am finally seeing.. Isn't it one of the rarest times that hmd is making the product available quickly after the announcement? Are you working on making the manufacturing and supply chain even further strengthened in order to make the availability faster than where it is now?
Y U no do an event or live stream 😠😧?! Quite literally, sir, media showcase a few weeks earlier and no presentation or live stream for the fans and the end-users? You know it is painful having to browse from website to website to get more information about a product because it is silently announced and not each website has the information in as much detail as somebody like me would want to have. I felt myself being a bit left out. Even the PR at hmdglobal.com does not have pricing or photos of the devices.
I think I have sent you some questions that you weren't expecting and some that you may not wanna answer. The other guys are gonna get nice ones. Sorry 🙈 I might have more to add later on. I'll edit it if more comes to my mind. Thank you for your time!
Edit1: Okay, I wanted to add a bit more...
Why are there 2 flashlights? There are phones having 5 sensors and all supported by a single LED flash. And then we have the XR20 with 2 flashlights, probably one to support each camera. So, why? Just to make it complete the design? As we generally say that adding a 2MP macro is as useful as not having it, can you please explain the utility of the 2nd flash? I suspect it is only there to complete the design, in which case I'd wanna ask - why not a 3rd camera sensor instead, maybe a 5MP macro?
Hello Miika Mahonen sir! There, we found you again for some questions. You've been missing in action since the Nokia 7.2 launch days, welcome back! How are you doing? So, are you the sketch artist behind the elegant-looking yet rugged XR20? Nice job by yourself and the team!
How did you feel when the product/marketing team(s) proposed a rugged device that should not look ugly? Because to be very frank 99% of the rugged devices are ugly and bulky. It's like an inherent property of rugged devices that they look like a tank (even when sometimes they don't act like one :P). So... did you feel this moment, even for once => 🙄? 😂
Continuing with that, How difficult was the job of actually designing something attractive yet rugged? If I am right, the materials change and there's probably lesser in your hand to make a tough material still look pleasing, speaking of which, what grade of materials are used in the construction? Do you maybe have a video of the manufacturing process for our eyes to see? 😍
Why did you decide to move the Nokia branding to the side instead of on the chin (usual)? Because I can see that the chin has reduced in size, but still probably has ample space for a logo that will be more visible. Is this something we'll see more often?
And.. I like the back camera and flash placements forming an X. Is this a new direction of camera decoration design for Nokia smartphones i.e. moving away from the Oreo-like round camera housings we've seen since late 2019? Will this X become a signature of future Nokia X-series devices? Is the X communicating something here.. like an X-factor?
What are the lines here? You see the one that looks like an antenna point on devices with metal construction. Is it just an element of design? Or do they have any significance?
The color.. I haven't seen the device in real, but the renders show as if the color green has a few shades of itself in different areas. Are there such differences in color hex at different parts of the device? Or is the back shell designed made that there's a color glow?
Water resistance and the ports? Companies have generally excused themselves for removing the headphone jack by saying that it is necessary for water resistance. And you are still keeping it. Is it harder to have protection against water damage now that there's a headphone jack? I assume that the water still does enter into the jack and the USB-C port and the speaker. How is it stopped from going further inside the device and damaging the electronics? I wonder how the process of water resistance works.
My questions
Hello, Petri Hayrynen, how's it there in Finland?! 😁
The first thing that comes to my mind is.. Who's the primary target with the Nokia XR20? Is it the real end-consumers i.e. people like us who buy general-purpose phones for day-to-day usage smartphones, or some enterprises or some specific segment of people such as those in demanding jobs?
How excited are you about being able to literally permitting the sales staff to throw the phone or immerse it in water at retail counters? Are you planning something like that? Because I am quite excited. You know when you're so proud of your product that you actually do it (even though, yes there can be some unfortunate embarrassments.. like the tesla truck. Have you guys had any embarrassing moment with the XR20 yet?) 😁
Where's it heading on priority? UK, EU, and US (LATM too?).. Are these supposedly the prime markets for the Nokia XR20? How about Asia, are we going to see it in stores around us here?
Case and skin makers will hate you for this or are you revenging them for not making available decent cases and skins for Nokia smartphones! 🤣🤣
Marketinggggggggggg! Is it going in the hands of YouTubers? I'm probably quite interested in knowing what Zack from JerryRigEverything has to say about the device. I haven't seen him touch Nokias in a while, but he might be excited about this one. Is it going to happen? More creator collaborations, please!
Why does it support NavIC and Beidou? Okay, I can guess that it will launch in India. But I'm certain it isn't heading to China. So, is the support only there to make the device truly global i.e. for travelers? Or do you think you've made something so amazing that they'd wanna import it there? 😋
I have a single question.
And that is....
When will Nokia XR20 launch in Pakistan?
Nokia X10/20 isn't even launched here yet. And the distributor of Nokia is doing a poor job of bringing Nokia devices here and selling them. They brought the G series but there's no signs of X10 and 20 and I'm hoping to buy XR20 LOL.
It looks like a great phone and a good replacement for my Nokia 7 plus.
Will there be an 8GB version of the Nokia XR20?
Will Nokia be selling a wireless charger?
Dedicated Google Assistant buttons have put me off buying recent Nokia phones. Is this button programmable like the new top button?
Very Excited to see this legend in peoples and hand very soon, very amazing teaser video. Looks it seems one of the toughest and rugged phone currently in smartphone market.
My question is why XR20 is launched silently? It should announce in live stream or Media coverage so people can interact more and launch time is also so uncomfortable for many region's.
Another question is the XR20 has OIS and lossless optical Zoom ?
Any special glass protection use for camera lens ?
Presently I was using nokia 6.1 plus it's really good if there is some issue in phone then immediately some patch update it fixed that issue.once x20 is released I will go for that one the features are awesome especially updates to mobile and strong body for future purpose in long run. I request for nokia to bring whatsapp support from nokia care as like laptop support service in secure way
I am awaiting for this xr20 it really brings high value in the market to competative. I am really awaiting much for this type of mobile
And oh boy, @madbilly, you'll definitely have some questions. If you are around, please jump in :D I'm waiting for something from your perspective.
U guys are unable to deliver android 11 upgrade to ur devices and on the other hand promising 4 years of updates? Have some shame please. It u don't have then tell me n I will make u learn what shame is...
1) What is SpeedWarp camera mode? Please explain in detail.
2) Why there is no Pure-Display technology for Nokia XR20? If it is why not it mentioned?
3) Why OnePlus Nord 2 steal Nokia mobile bothie/dualphotography function?
I'm very interested in the XR20 for my business. Will this phone work with Tmobile in the USA? Specifically the 5g bands?
The n71 (600MHz) band is what I am most interested in as it has covers most of the US.
I found some technical documentation at https://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=6506 that shows the XR20 supporting band 71 but it shows it as an LTE 4G band (which I don't think exists) instead of it being band n71 5G. Does the modem support n71 but the technical name is just 71?
Hi @bourbon123,
I think you can find the supported bands on this page: https://www.nokia.com/phones/en_gb/nokia-xr-20/specs
Cheers 🙂
Hi HMD team,
Thanks for the ping @singhnsk, I'm so busy these days I would have missed this relatively stealth launch by HMD - I agree, what's with the vids but no "live" launch? Having said that, the CEO doesn't exactly set the stage on fire so maybe it's better not to. Nice an polite gentleman though, from what I remember, although we never did get a copy of that photo we had taken with him did we?
Great promo vid with Roberto Carlos! How many phones did you actually break when doing that shoot? Come on now, the truth! 😃
I like this phone. Which surprises me! I was imagining something like the 800 tough but in smartphone form, but this is actually very nice and to most people will look like any other nice looking smartphone - well done HMD! 👏
Especially keeping the dimensions still relatively small, compared to the X20 base model, well done there. It's still too big for me though, I couldn't use it one handed and it certainly wouldn't fit in a pocket, thank goodness for the lanyard attachment! When will you start making smaller phones again? My Nokia 8 is really as big as I can go one-handed.
I think the specs are a little safe, there's nothing really very exciting although there are definitely some flagship type features there.
Given the thickness of the phone why didn't HMD keep the larger X20 camera, or even the 8.3 camera? (or is that the same as the X20? I can't remember). Overall I think the camera set up is very poor for this price point, even if you think you are only competing against other rugged devices.
OIS would seem like an obvious think to put on a phone which is going to be used in rough situations, I'm sure you could have squeezed it in - maybe for the NR30? 😉
Xenon flash is another thing which I'm sure people who will use this phone professionally (e.g. in factories, power stations, etc) would appreciate. LED flashes just don't cut it when one really wants to light up a subject.
Same question as others - what are the two flashes for?
Why didn't you add an IR or night vision camera? One of these two seems to be a staple for the rugged phone competition.
Great to see "glove mode" back again! This time for wet and gloved hands. Does it have to be activated like on the Lumias or is it on permanently? A toggle could help save battery. Will it work with ski gloves?
Wireless charging is a surprise, I've not seen many wireless charging stations on worksites and in teh great outdoors...
A bigger battery is probably needed for that apparently super bright screen.
I know that replaceable batteries and waterproofing are difficult to do at the same time but this is a missed opportunity to show what you can do.
However, you've kept the 3.5mm headphone jack which is good!
A hybrid-SIM slot is disappointing. Many professionals who want this phone will need removable storage to transfer the photos/videos they take onto other machines, they won't be allowed to use USB or bluetooth. Many will also have two SIMs, one for work and one for personal use, so you really should have separate SIM and SD card slots? What marketing research led you to believe a hybrid slot would be acceptable?
Pre-installed with Spotify, but does it come with a free subscription?
I agree, are those speakers stereo? If not then missed opportunity there.
Also a missed opportunity only having 2 mics and not going for a better OZO Audio set up, although nice to see OZO Playback there.
What is the repairability index in France? https://www.indicereparabilite.fr/?s=Nokia
Cheers 🙂
