Settings > more > Mobile Networks > Preferred network type.
    2G - 2G only
    3G - 3G and 2G mode

    4G - 4G> 3G> 2G based on the available service in area / network

Check the Nokia 5 user guide once.

  • I understand what you just wrote. But, I am talking about an options of '4g only', '3g only' and '2g only' to the network types in the network settings. Take note of the "ONLY". It's a measure that disallow automatic network switch from 4g to 3g to 2g. This will greatly reduced the problem of fluctuations and downtime due to automatic switching between. You cannot enjoy your internet where/ when the network is always switching. But, with the options of '4g only' or '3g only' the phone network will stable because it doesn't switch automatically and it's been managed by the owners.

I get the feature you "want" on your phone. Since it is not available at present, making changes to the network is the most feasible solution. That is if U really need to.
What good does '4G only' mode do when the signal fluctuates between 4G and 3G. Its better to have some signal reception than no signal, and wait until you are in the 4G network range. Also, there is hardly any significant downtime when switching between 4G / 3G signals.

Setting phone to 3G mode will be good imo and switching to 4G when u require high speed.

There is a way to set the phone to 2G / 3G only mode.

Settings > more > Mobile Networks > Preferred network type >2G
    2G only    - Works fine.

3G only    - This involves extra work .

    1. Settings > more > Mobile Networks > Preferred network type > 3G
    2. Dial (    *#*#4636#*#*   ). You will navigate to 'Testing' screen. Select 'phone information'.
    3. In Set preferred network type - select 'WCDMA only'.   (If it is in 'WCDMA preferred' it switches between GSM and WCDMA based on the signal strength).

    4G - 4G> 3G> 2G based on the available service in area / network
