Two years of delivering on our pure, secure and up-to-date Android promise

Here at the home of Nokia phones, we’re committed to ensuring our fans have peace of mind by offering them the most up-to-date and secure Android experience on their Nokia smartphones. In February 2017, we introduced the new era of Nokia smartphones with our unique promise of pure, secure and up-to-date Android. In our first year, we brought to you Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 and Nokia 2* and made a commitment to you that your Nokia smartphones would stay fresh and secure  for longer with our promise of two major OS updates and two years of regular security updates.

And here we are, two years on, delighted to tell you that we’re surpassing that pledge. As the two-year period draws to a close for these smartphones, we remain committed to delivering the best and most secure experiences. So, what does it mean? Once we reach 2 years from the time last market launched these smartphones (and following Operator and regional approvals), the Nokia 8, Nokia 6**, Nokia 5 and the Nokia 3 will be able to receive quarterly security patch updates right through to the end of the 3rd year. To ensure you’ll be up to date, these quarterly releases will include all patches from the previous months.

We aim to be completely transparent when it comes to updates and software. That’s why we want to ensure that Nokia smartphone fans know when their model will no longer receive the security updates they’ve been used to. This will apply to the full Nokia smartphone family – so everyone can benefit from a smartphone that stays secure for longer.  After two years of monthly updates, the Nokia 3 will be the first model to start receiving updates quarterly updates from September 2019 until September 2020.

Quarterly security update switch dates:

  • Nokia 5 - Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020
  • Nokia 6** - Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020
  • Nokia 8 - Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020

*For users of Nokia 2, the security patch support will conclude in November 2019

**For users of Nokia 6 Amazon (USA and India), the security patch support will conclude in October 2019

    @HMD_Laura how does this fit in with the Android Enterprise Recommended promise of at least three years security updates delivered within 90 days after Google release???


    At least Nokia 8 is such a device ...

    What do you think? If they haven't fixed issues in all this time throughout the regular update cycle, there's no chance it will happen on bottom of the barrel, end-of-life support. The quarterly releases aren't for spending more time on fixing bugs, they're for investing the least amount of resources to keep up their appearances of providing good OS support. I just have no expectations that HMD will do anything above the bare minimum NOW of all times, when they've hardly done so over the two years.

    What's funny regarding announcement for Nokia 2 is already nougat is running well for few of consumers but with this announcement you have made them to hurt and loose trust ,which is not even a big thing for a company like you and Oreo 8.1 completely forget about it since you have again proved that delivering software upgrades along with SP is not a possible job for you for a device because at the time of rumors and device FCC specifications Nokia 3 and Nokia 2 resembles same design but to get both into market some changes must be made and that's changes were not made it perfectly by the R and D for Nokia 2,so now seeing this announcement is not a hurting thing,Well Done HMD!Well Done

    But why no to Nokia 6 Amazon(India and US) users,are they still doesn't meet the requirements for Quarterly updates?At least make some review for those users since you have already lost the Nokia 2 users with these but have some focus for those users who own that specified Device since there are the users sincerely have made HMD to rise up to this stage at very beginning of this chapter.

    Excellent news for my quartet of 2017 Nokia 5 and 6 phones. This kind of support is why Nokia will be my preferred supplier when they're due for replacement next year.

    One request: please keep the fingerprint sensor on the front as I use a windscreen holder which obscures those on the rear (and why I've not bought the .1 versions), thanks.

    Thanks for sharing this, I'm sure many will be happy with the extended support and having a definitive date in mind for EOL.

    By Nokia 6 Amazon, do you mean the Prime Exclusive version that had ads or the regular TA-1025 variant which I think was only sold by Amazon in the US and Canada.

    See HMD have rights to do what ever they can because HMD and Google are the partners in Software development and they can make any device under android enterprise recommend,Nokia 1 and 2 are the first ever devices in Low Configuration based devices but Since it's not happy for users who doesn't even get into optional upgrade and stayed where HMD recommend and left the entire days with only SP and MR update,So why don't they deserve the Additional Updates in the form of Quarter Updates,Since there is no such clarity that Quarter updates will be like security updates or MR updates or what exactly meant?What type of fixes they do get?Since Whooping for Additional Updates is not answer of joy than asking for the reasonable things for a users

    Regarding Android Enterprise it's not a surprise since all the devices are getting certified like a degree certificate for most of Android Enterprise Recommend and other OEM of Android one are having such recommend or not don't have clarity but only for the reason of Android Enterprise Recommend,giving additional update is not likely to be good reason since Nokia 6 also deserves that but why Nokia 2 & 6(specified) has gave up for that?At least as a part of equal share in 3 years of OS if they did then acceptable or else after all this doesn't make sense for Nokia 2 and Nokia 6(specified) users

    @HMD_Laura Since Nokia 8 is Treble capable, albeit unofficially, it would be more than welcome by the customers if HMD makes at least the proprietary blobs public, so the community can create a proper vendor image.

    Really?Where did you get this info that Nokia 8 support Treble?I only know Nokia 8 just support dual partition for seamless update.

    Does this include the .x models? I've been wanting to come back to Nokia for quite some time now and am looking at the 6.1 (mostly) at the moment. One of the reasons I'd like to back Nokia again (other than missing my old ones lol) is because of the Android One program and I've seen reviews/camera examples, etc and the 6.1 seems like it would fit my needs the most. I'm kind of waiting to see the 6.2 first though... but yeah, sorry about that.

    Are the .1 versions included in the above or just the main 6, etc devices?

    @ValerieAnne Do note that the 6.1 is already an year old and it will get Android Q and then the monthly security updates for the next year. You should really checkout the 6.2 and see if it fits your budget and needs.

    Thank you @Kartik Gada =) I wanted to make sure/check since it's a sub of the phones listed but slightly newer models.. so wanted to check lol

    @singhnsk Thank you. I probably will, unless I can find a good deal on the phone. Unless I can find the screen size of the new ones, as that will be a deal breaker, as with smaller hands, I'd like to keep my screen size under 6" and that's getting harder and harder to do nowadays (my Samsung is a 5.1 (I believe)).

    How can you claim that your Android is pure when is full of third party package from Evenwell? 
    If I take Nokia 5.1 for example it is so full of evenwell packages so it is almost scary.
    In addition Nokia 5.1 and many other models (I own 6 different models) shuts down apps that have been in the background for a while even though you choose to exclude it from battery optimization. The support was upset about this too but they can't answer why this is "by design".
    As it is now all my 6 different Nokia models are unusable for our family because 'Family Locator' app just won't work!

    Define "Pure Android". Do you mean AOSP only? Well, good luck finding a phone which runs that and is any good at all.
    Do you mean the same as a Nexus or Pixel? Well, the Nexus' had the ODM integration apps similar to Evenwell in them (from LG, Huawei, Samsung, Motorola, etc) and both the Nexus and Pixels are full of Google's proprietary non-AOSP apps and other stuff, so I don't really call that pure, do you?
    So, please define pure, then we can have a sensible conversation about it.
