In my opinion that's because more (not always useful) software features were introduced, complex higher-level languages code too and I'd imagine less and less optimized for speed while every programming priorities seems like oriented only for connectivity more than optimization of the offline o.s. itself and no matter how heavy the code will be, more cpu/gpu cores and more gigabytes of ram will help anyway.
In the 80's software programmers had to make miracles to optimize their software code to use those few hardware resources, I'd ask if nowdays optimization is still a priority.
