Nokia 1 suddenly incompatible with Google Messages app

I really hope Nokia has some kind of explanation for this as Google are about as helpful as a chocolate teapot.

Not only has the play store uninstalled all updates for Google Messages app, it now no longer even appears in play store for me. Going on play store on pc it says Nokia 1 is incompatible.

Nokia what the **** is going on????

  • Finally figured out what is wrong. I've uninstalled updates again to revert back to factory version of app. I've had a look in the manifest and it says the version of Google Messages I have was designed for Android Q. As I do not have that on my phone (I have Android Pie), the Play Store will never find me a compatible app as my OS does not coincide with what the app thinks I have. Which begs the question - how am I supposed to revert the app to what it should be?

  • I have checked in system/app folder and a lot of my Google apps all say the build version is Q. I have some still designed for Android 9 but the ones like YouTube, YouTube Go, Messages, Photos all say build is Q.

I had the September 5th security update only a few days ago. Call me suspicious but I do not believe this to be a coinsidence. I believe this OTA update has turned Google Apps into Q versions but Nokia 1 still has Android Pie.

If I uninstalled updates on another Google app, I bet that will too become incompatible. I will test out this theory and update.

Who can help with this? Is it Nokia who need to sort this out or Google?
  • Deerp, thanks for thoroughly documenting the issue. I just wanted to confirm that i'm having the exact same problem on my nokia 1. I cannot offer any help, though.
The Android Messages Beta version gets updated fairly often imho, so maybe the issue will sort itself out. This is, after all, Nokia we're talking about...

It looks like you are not alone. Another user mentioned the same for his Nokia 7.1. Probably a server-side push is causing some incompatibility issues.
I just checked on my Nokia 8.1, and the outcome is the same - no longer compatible. I believe we should wait for an update from Google. It won't be an issue with Nokia/HMD, instead some config issue at Google.
  • @bertt I sympathise with you. I have not received any text messages at all since debacle started. I do not know whether there will be RCS issues either. Mine is factory version of Messages app. I checked the version on APKMirror. It is months out of date.

I created a thread on google support which you can view here - https://support.google.com/messages/thread/16105903?hl=en#
I attempted to have a conversation with live chat on HMD Nokia app and the representative was incredibly rude and even quite blatantly accused me of spreading rumours by going on google support and made it crystal clear to me that Nokia mobile care cannot and will not help. When I asked for an email address or form of contact with his superiors, he said he would block me from contacting Nokia support again and then disappeared completely from the chat.

I even sent an official complaint to the email address listed on play store as app support and haven't even been acknowledged. All I did was ask if he was aware of any issues with the app or what I can do to resolve it. This has left me completely frustrated and angry.

@singhnsk although it upsets me to hear that other people including yourself are having the exact same issues as me, I am actually relieved that this was not all in my mind and I wasn't in some nightmarish alternate reality where I am haunted by rogue Nokia employees and there is a genuine problem here.

    Thanks again both of you.

Same Thing Happens for Nokia 2(2017) after doing factory reset,Looks Like App manifest makes this issue(OS: Android 8.1)

  • @user1520881638007 thanks for letting us know. I will add your device to the ever increasing list of NOKIA devices that are currently affected on Google community support thread I created.
  • @Deerp , thanks for the thread over at google support and your general motivation to investigate this mess.
  • @bertt no problem. If we community members did not inform each other of any problems with our phones, we would be none the wiser as to what is going on.

As Nokia and Google seem to be suspiciously quiet about this, I decided to up the ante by also sending tweets to Android Police and going on Reddit where the community there can be extremely vocal when silence is all you hear from companies who should look out for their customers best interests 😉

  • The Same Thing Has Happend oN My Nokia 5.1 Plus As WeLL. What The ****... 😑😑

  • This situation is now getting out out of hand. Practically every Nokia phone in their smartphone range is affected and yet when Google and Nokia are being kept up-to-date on developments, either we get the silent treatment or be told it is someone else's responsibility.

I have written more messages in here, Google Support and Nokia Live chat the past few days than the entire Nokia Social Media team has done this year. Oh wait there isn't a social media team at all and we are just talking to ourselves banging our heads against a brick wall.

As soon as I am paid I am getting a new non-Nokia phone. It is my belated New Year's Resolution to myself.
  • Same thing is happening in my Nokia 5.1 plus  after reset i am stuck of factory build number even it is not appearing on Google Play store. I hope they fix this issue
  • We may not too long to wait now. According to play store there is a new beta available that doesn't seem to be on any APK sites I've checked. Still incompatible and cannot download it direct from play store but at least a sign of possible good news

  • Nokia 8 user here. I posted about this problem on our forums. I mean, what else is there to say... Hoping for a fix in some shape or form.

    https://community.phones.nokia.com/discussion/52606/google-messages-device-not-compatible-issue-comes-to-nokia-8
  • @darkbrow79 thanks for the update. I checked out your topic and it looks like on your screenshot your latest version of beta is supposed to have been released October 9th, same day as the one in my play store but is still somehow incompatible with the phone. I am really hoping this new update gets put to our phones asap.

ApkMirror hasn't got this version and nowhere else has either yet. Basically it's 5.0.059 beta that is supposed to be new.

I have heard nothing new on Google support and absolutely zero information from Google or Nokia.

What really annoys me is these companies put support emails on the play store  yet clearly do not monitor them at all.
  • I think this really is a Nokia-only thing, unfortunately. I also own a midrange Asus device running Oreo, and it has updated to the latest Messages beta with no issues at all.

It sure would be nice if someone from Nokia actually acknowledged this issue right about now. This is getting ridiculous.
  • @darkbrow79 I have already had it confirmed that since this issue started, I have not received text messages from friends on at least 3 separate occasions and one of my friends even showed me the text with confirmed delivery report yet I never received them. These events may very well be unrelated but until someone who represents Google or Nokia can confirm this, I am left to draw my own conclusions.

If they want to work behind the scenes and fix, fair enough but do it in a timely enough fashion that doesnt  affect us for longer than necessary. If they cannot fix for a while, bare minimum we should be informed about it and an actual confirmation that they are doing something about it

Google and Nokia are both multi-billion pound corporations who can easily afford to pay for support staff to help their customers who pay their wages.

The fact they only offer silent treatment actually speaks volumes on what they really think of us.
  • Sorry about your messaging woes, my Messages app still does work, just that I couldn't update it. I'm still gonna keep an eye on any developments if they should come. I certainly hope they do.

The compileSDKVersion is just whatever SDK version the developer used to build the app, it doesn't impact backwards compatibility. The minSDKVersion handles that, if the app opens on your device and doesn't crash it most likely supports whatever version of Android you're on.

For this issue I think Google either made updates to the listing that broke updates or a recent OS update on Nokia devices did that.
  • @Deerp What's the current version of the Messages app on your Nokia 1?
    Mine's 4.2.069 (Fairie_RC18_xhdpi.armeabi-v7a.phone.go)
  • @bertt that is the same as mine. If you uninstall updates that is the one you get if you factory reset your phone too.

Latest Stable version is 4.8 and latest beta is 5.0.059
  • @HMDLaura as you are the only one who works for Nokia who actually comes on this board, can you actually find out what is going on here with this messaging app? Every single Nokia phone is affected, Google is being silent and I've personally gone everywhere I can to get some answers and had silence in return.

    Please investigate this matter.
  • Received this email from Nokia Mobile Care -

    Hi Phil Reed,

Tanks for your patience on this matter!

Regarding the problem you had encountered - this message is showing in all Android One devices and we are investigating this with the developer.

As soon as there is any development regarding a possible solution, we will contact you.

Let us know if there is anything else I can help you out with.

    Best regards,
    Danny

  • Just checked and yes, it did show up to me. It's weird because I didn't really know this problem exist. I'm using a Nokia 5 btw.

This problem has existed for well over a week now. For me a week last Sunday. It's affected every Nokia smartphone @cooljevil
  • How about installing it from Aptoide? No stores, just gratis, reliable stuff.
  • Same issue in my nokia 5.1 plus . Nokia should do something
  • How about installing it from Aptoide? No stores, just gratis, reliable stuff.
There are plenty of places to sideload from @tudor georgescu such as APK Mirror and as you describe - Aptoide. My point is we should not have to download from anywhere apart from the play store as it's a system app that comes with the phone. The fact we have to seek alternatives is making Google look extremely negligent when they keep reminding us the only safe place to download is the play store and we cannot even do that with this app.

I am still awaiting an update from Nokia mobile care but at least they have confirmed there is a problem and are looking into it on our behalf.
