Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 belong to the same product family. They have similar mechanical structure, with composite frame and glass covers. Where Nokia 8.1 uses CNC machined aluminum structure. Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 have internal aluminum chassis and polymer composite frame molded around it.
We selected polymer composite to create a design that is solid and feels great in your hand. A material that would help to join everything together seamlessly and support our beautiful Nordic minimalistic design style. Goal was to deliver fantastically durable and smart devices.

BootloaderUnlockWhen said:I really dig the design of the 7.2 (and 6.2!), especially the rear, but there's just this one thing I really miss. Nokia was well-known for having camera-centric phones with dedicated shutter buttons in the not-so-distant past. Is there a reason this hasn't been brought back for the Nokia 7.2, or for the newer Nokia phones in general? As for the front design, we've seen other manufacturers incorporate full, bezelless design, smaller v-notches, and even punch hole displays for their midrange phones, even HMD released one - the Nokia X71. Some were expecting this design for the 7.2, but it didn't turn out to be the case. Won't the similar design of the two confuse and/or make the 7.2 less appealing for consumers? And will HMD still release a phone with a punch hole display in the near future, as we've seen with the X71?
I really like how HMD has incorporated some of the unique Nokia designs into the new phones (the LED power button, the circular camera layout, etc), but some people think this is not enough and that the new phones are a bit too 'generic.' I know there's not much more companies can do to differentiate their phones, but does HMD plan on making more unique, more 'Nokia'-looking phones in the future? Perhaps something like the square-ish, symmetrical design of the Lumia 925?All our products are inspired by our Nordic heritage so in a way they are connected by a common theme or inspiration. While both Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 were designed as a single product family, we made sure that the visual outlook for both are very different.
Where Nokia 6.2 is glossy and very trendy, the big brother Nokia 7.2 looks very different with its premium and sophisticated design style using new type of matte finish.

Theodore said:Will future phone have camera shutter buttons? Was about disappointed they didn't appear in the 7.2.
Good question. From our experience most of users only use virtual keys from the touch screen. But we are always happy to receive feedback and ideas. Will put this down for ideation for future products

thanoofnaina said:come on sir, tell us about the new polycarbonate material frame. how did you came to that material.
Our endeavor has been to lead in the area of design and materials innovation. We follow the Scandinavian simplicity and purity as opposed to complexity – reducing the unnecessary and are constantly researching and testing new materials.
In smartphone design there are many areas that need to be taken into consideration. For example antenna design, the material conductivity. Manufacturing limitations, how can we achieve the perfect form and shape.
For the Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2, we chose polymer composite as we could mold it perfectly into shape we wanted and did not have to compromise on the durability or quality that our fans have come to expect from a Nokia phone. This composite material gave a solid feel to the phone and when combined with glass gives it a distinctively Nokia phone feel
The polymer composite is more rigid and stronger that basic plastics and together with internal aluminum chassis it makes a very light and rigid structure. Now in Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 we have integrated glass covers directly in to the frame, the basic structure is now very simplified having only 3 parts, glass/frame/glass. Looks great and also feels good in your hand.

Miko N. said:Just why bigger phone size? At this moment its not possible buy small mid-range phone. I am happy with my Nokia 7.1. And why alu frame anymore? I dont understand this trend...
We listen to consumers while designing our phones – for us that is always the starting point. Consumers across many markets want a large display size as the phone is their primary medium for content consumption – they read, watch, share information via their smartphone.

itsmarvinabel said:What factored in the decision in making the Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 extremely similar in design? The only way to tell the difference between the two phones are the color options, and the presence of frosted glass back and ZEISS logo on the camera module for 7.2.
Why not recycle the Nokia X71 that was released exclusively in China and Taiwan for the new generation 7 line?Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 have been developed side by side as a product family. Even their design and structure is similar the visual outlook and experience is very different. Both following our simplified and premium design style Nokia 6.2 with high polished covers and Nokia 7.2 with its professional design style using new type of matte finished glass. The colours are inspired by Finnish design and heritage. Selected to create strong memorable experiences.

what was the reason behind the water drop notch that is little big and also the big chin at bottom of the phone?if it is a circular camera setup on back then punchhole camera on front looks more stylish,

The benefit of using glass is that it is non-conductive material. This helps us too improve the performance of the antennas. From design point of view glass is a great material as it is clean and has high surface hardness. In 7.2 we use our new satin glass which even helps to prevent fingerprints. Glass material feels good and natural in your hand, not cold or industrial.

Thansk for your question.
In both Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 we have made a lot of effort to offer great camera experiences and the notch-style display could support our current cameras. The front of the phone is also designed to have our PureDisplay that offers a very high quality viewing experience.5 -
madbilly said:I've read that the Google Assistant button can't be remapped which seems strange when HMD seems to pride itself on giving users what they want. Please can you explain this odd choice?Cheers
The Button is specifically designed to support the Google Assistant experience on Nokia phone. To make sure that it works the most optimum way offering an engaging experience for the user the software and hardware is dedicated only for the Google assistant.

madbilly said:I don't understand the reluctance of HMD to provide mid and high-range phones with removable batteries, and the 6.2 and 7.2 continue this trend. If the battery was user-replaceable we'd be able to buy two batteries and be able to use our phones to the full, not try and run them economically in case we forget to charge them overnight. Please can you explain this strange design decision?Cheers
Also luckily many options of extra portable batteries exist on the market. We also have our own small portable battery the “Nokia Portable Wireless Charger”which is a great accessory to extend use time.3 -
madbilly said:Do the 6.2 and 7.2 support exFAT on microSD cards greater than 32GB in capacity, as required by the SD association? https://www.sdcard.org/developers/overview/capacity/Cheers
Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 MicroSD card slot support up to 512 GB memory cards.

tacodelabueno said:How did the green cyan color come about? A bit unusual color for a phone, but really beautiful to look at.Hi @tacodelabueno
Thanks for the question.
We work on material and colour design nonstop, we started the development of Cyan Green more than a year ago and Cyan Green is a result of our new material and colour design style. A colour that has been a part of Finnish design, architecture fashion for decades, Cyan Green was an obvious choice for us. Not just a basic green but a tone that creates a very powerful colour experience together with advanced materials and technologies we use. We target to design memorable experiences as part of our Nordic premium design. Like you mentioned the Cyan Green is beautiful and fits Nokia 7.2 perfectly. We are glad you like it7 -
Kartik Gada said:Using Nokia 7.2 for almost 24 hours now. Very good design and in-hand feel but it is very slippery too. It fell on the hard floor while it was resting flat on a table. Thankfully nothing happened. There's no dent on the frame and the phone is fine. So, a very good build quality indeed.
Now, coming to my question. What colours were planned other than Ice, Cyan Green and Charcoal? Were there any other colours? Maybe you have a prototype of a Nokia 7.2 in a different colour which didn't launch. Can you show it if there is any?Hi @Kartik Gada
We experimented with lots of colours and styles when designing Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2. Our colours take a lot of inspiration of Finland. We are also very sensitive on colours and decide them carefully to have something that is timeless and not just seasonal. When we are selecting colour options for a new mobile phone, it must fit the design and material technologies perfectly but also look consistent as a family.
I wish I could show you more of all the cool things we are working on now but we need to keep future designs as a secret and a surprise
In the future you can see our new designs on our upcoming phone models

What do you think about the Lumia/N9 design language?

What do you think about notches? Do you think it ruins the symmetry of the phone? Can we expect punch hole or motorized cameras from HMD in the future?

madbilly said:Hi Miika,Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to answer our questions. The camera bump design is a change from all previous HMD phones, because it is round and not linear down the central back line of the phone. What is the reason for this change? Will we see this new design continued in future HMD phones?Cheers
)
As we now switched from dual camera to triple camera is set its own challenges and requirements for component placement, where round set up worked great on Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 Nokia phones have been using iconic round camera design since Lumia devices like for example in 1020. Nokia 9 also uses round format even slightly in a different way. We spend a lot of time to get all details right. The phone it self is very simplified but when you take a closer look you can see all the carefully designed details like the camera modules that are crafted from metal in Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2.4 -
What do you think about vivid colours for smartphones (yellow, orange, cyan, etc)? I'm sure there are some that would LOVE to own a new Nokia smartphone in yellow once again

How about using metallic shades with a Satin finish like on 7.2 in future Nokia phones. Silver, Copper, Gold, Grey would look amazing. 😁3

madbilly said:Please can you talk us through the lifecycle of development for the 6.2 and getting them to market, and how they are managed once in the market? For example, how long ago were designs and specs for these phones first produced? When did hardware development begin? When were first prototypes produced? How did the specs change along the way, which features were dropped?Pleas can you also say how different parts of HMD are involved in this process? E.g. which departments are responsible for what?Once the phones are being sold and have been released in all markets what happens then? Which part of HMD is responsible for ongoing support, particularly monitoring hardware failures and producing software updates?Cheers
Normal development including hardware and design takes about 1 year to finish. We already had first design concepts for Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 one year ago. Many departments of HMD work together to deliver a new product on the market. Including Industrial Design, mechanical engineering and software teams.
Quality teams supervise manufacturing and product quality. We make a lot of prototypes for testing design, hardware and software. In every project we produce hundreds of prototypes. In design we also make hundreds of material& colour testing samples and visual mock-ups to develop and lock down final design.
When products are launched to the market support teams are responsible for after sale maintenance and repairs. HMD promise of latest “Android that keeps getting better” means that you will get latest android security updates and and Android version updates.

madbilly said:Please can you tell us what activities took place in which HMD offices around the world to bring the 6.2 and 7.2 from the drawings board to market? Who did what in London, Espoo, Dubai, Shenzhen and Taiwan?Cheers
HMD is a very international company with its roots still in Finland. Team members in all these locations work together on delivering a new product. Also team members work and visit different locations for different activities. No location is specifically assigned for single purpose but works on different things based on each development program requirements.
For example myself during this year I have been working in Finland, London and in Shenzhen. To have the change to spend time in different cities and countries is very inspirational for a designer. It brings a lot of exposure and new ideas especially for our design team.

BootloaderUnlockWhen said:What do you think about the Lumia/N9 design language?Hi @BootloaderUnlockWhen
Lumia devices were and still have a very interesting design language. They are beatiful. But also lot have changed since they were launched. Now when our displays are taking more and more space on the front the design languages must also be redefined to fit with latest technologies.

BootloaderUnlockWhen said:What do you think about notches? Do you think it ruins the symmetry of the phone? Can we expect punch hole or motorized cameras from HMD in the future? From my point of view the notch on Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 works well. There is a nice feel of symmetry and balance as the camera is centered. Even we have powerful cameras the notch size is still quite small. And the smooth round shape looks very modern and integrated. Fits to the rest of the design. I would love to talk about our future products but I have to keep these as a secret5

How about bringing the XpressMusic back? A smartphone targeted at the youth with dedicated medi keys like they were on the Nokia X series and XpressMusic phones? That would make Nokias look cool and will also attract millenials.
Will ASHA return? Will Nokia ever try a new OS? How about Sailfish OS on a Nokia Asha phone?7 -

We love colours and we spend a lot of time developing, testing and picking the right ones. Our goal when designing is that we want to create something that is in its way timeless, looks good today and looks good in the future. We also select colours in the same way. Long lasting experiences and not seasonal. Thank you for the comments as I am always happy to hear ideas and feedback. I will make sure to bring this up on our next colour brainstorming session

Lazysince1995 said:Hello team,
Thanks a ton for this opportunity to communicate directly with designer of new Nokia phones.
I'm Nokia 6.1 plus user which having similar glass at back like new 7.2 & 6.2 having. In terms of design, curv and durability is awesome and can't be compared with phones of other brands. But only one small problem I felt is the glass at back is too sleepery. Why don't team think about some changes with existing design?
And why Nokia is still stucked on 30fps and 60fps slow motion? And that too with poor quality of video. This must need to look for upcoming phones.Glass is non-conductive which means it is good for antenna performance. Also glass is more scratch resistant compared to current plastics and aluminum. In Nokia 7.2 we introduce new satin glass finish which will reduce visible fingerprints and feels great too. We are currently developing new material technologies to improve experiences even more. As always we welcome all the feedback and take it into consideration in new design projects
By the way, have you thought about getting a Nokia case, this could improve the grip even more and also protect your phone?
