Google Messages - "Device not compatible" issue comes to Nokia 8

What it says in the title.

This "bug" or whatever it is currently affects several Nokia users across a number of other models.  More details of the problem can be found elsewhere in these forums.  I'm posting this to confirm that yes, the Nokia 8 is unfortunately not safe from it.

Hopefully Nokia, or Google, or both will move to rectify this soon.

  • Strange but "messages" is no longer listed in my installed apps on the play store.

The only way to see this error, for any one interested.
Tap and hold messages icon, tap the info  (top right), tap advanced, scroll down to "store" and tap app details and low and behold it says no longer compatible.

    Seems to work ok though.

  • same issue on Nokia 8.1 messaging app is incompatible. What the heck Google is doing. Please spread these problems to whole social media tweet to Google and other social media. Because most nokia devices are affected.

    It's more likely HMD's fault.

I confirm I have this problem on a TA-1012. Did anyone actually report this to support yet?
    Cheers :)
  • As far as I understand, It's just saying that the new version of messages is not compatible with android 9. Therefore won't/can't be installed.
The old version is still functioning fine.

Hi @Mick1965 but don't 8.1 owners on Android 10 get the same message? I thought they did...

  • It's just the way I read it, that it was a not having android 10 issue.

If it's not I'm sure that they will sort it.

No biggy though, the current one still works fine

    It's not a Nokia/HMD specific issue:
    https://support.google.com/messages/thread/16105903?msgid=17440849

Upvote that thread, and report the issue from within the Messages app > 3 dot menu > Help and feedback.
Make sure to allow the log files so Google's developers get something to work with.

    @Mick1965 ,
Nokia 8 reverts to Messages version 3.9.039 if the phone is factory reset, without updates available from the app store.
    (Tested by uninstalling updates).

Being detached from app updates is a concern regarding bug fixes, security issues and new features.

I doubt it, it is happening on Samsung phones as well.

@MrBelter Which ones? I've asked a few people who own Samsung phones (A3, A8, J3, S9) and none of them have this issue. Also, Google doesn't seem able to provide any search results related to Samsung phones and Android Messages incompatibility. What is your source for this claim?

    Samsung phones as well.

Found it. Those phones are exhibited in a store and most likely not updated, so that doesn't really prove anything. There are no forum discussions about S10 or other Samsung models which are experiencing this particular issue.

Or, sumsang use their own messaging app and either the users haven't noticed or not bothered.

Not straight forward to notice this error, there's a few steps needed to be taken to observe it.
This is more than likely the main reason why.

Yeah but so far we don't have an owner of any Samsung phone to confirm this issue. MrBelter thinks a photo of Samsung phone exhibited in a store with no up-to-date software installed is a definite proof that Samsung phones also have this issue. The only thing we know as a fact is that HMD's "Nokia phones" have this issue.

"Messages" was just updated to Ver. 5.0.062 on my Nokia 8 ... and is (still) working :D
  • This is a problem with the play store.
Tap and hold the play store app.
    Tap the info (top right)
    Tap storage
    Clear cache
    Clear data
Re open playstore and the messages app is there waiting to update

  • They fixed it just now, apparently. I was finally able to update my Messages app. Maybe it's rolling out right now for the other affected units/models as well.

It wasn't a Play Store problem but a Messages problem in that previous versions were compiled just for Android 10. The update that is available is a fixed version compiled for Pie and 10.

One ell of a coincidence then.😕
Check the messages app, incompatibility error.
    Clear cache and data.
Reopen play store app  and it updates.
Just posting what sorted it for me.

  • Issue fixed by new Google play update.
