[Update 28/04/20] Android 10 on Nokia 8 Sirocco

  • There was at least one user who reported that a factory reset did help in his case.

If you do try and it doesn't help, at least you can tell them that.

I can understand your reluctance, however. Setting up your phone again will take some time, in particular if you have lots of larger apps installed and creating the necessary backups can be a hassle.

anyone got the update in the UK? It's beyond a joke now that the mobile tech guys are talking about whats to come in android 11 soon and we still haven't seen last years update!

Has been available for over a month on my UK Sirocco. Haven't installed it yet though, given all the issues users have reported.

Cheers, it seems my virtual network piggybacking off EE isn't on any list for updates. When Android 9 came out Nokia told me it was the networks fault, my Newtown told me it's not there fault and round in circles I went. Solution is to swap Sims. I need to try the update as my network told me some time ago I need to factory reset the phone to fix calls not working when 4g is switched on!

I was hoping for so much more from the new Nokia!

I will let you know how the update goes!

  • After updating the my-phone-app at the end of may, I can't login with my google account. So no possibilty to reach the support with this support-app. When I login via browser the support disconnects. So no soup for me😂 After all the bugs in Android 10 and the new one, that some apps on startscreen disappear after restart, I'm done with Nokia/HMD. No informations, not one single word, that they recognized the problems and are working on them. I can't believe it...

  • I am very upset that GСAM has stopped working on Android 10. The phone is not cheap, but support sucks. Previously, I recommended everyone to Nokia as high-quality phones, now I will stop doing this.

I am very pleased with the work of the Sirocco on Android 10. It was fast before, and now it is even faster. I'm really pleasantly surprised. Good job, HMD. 👌🏻

On the downside, the system camera app is still only average, and since switching to Android 10 no version of Gcam is working anymore.

All in all, I'm very pleased with this phone and I hope that HMD will make good models like this in the future as well, so when that time comes I could get a worthy successor to my Sirocco. 👍🏻

I'm pretty sure you didn't test yet the wi-fi connection ! You'll notice a lot of connection drops, weird range, password which is not saved...

So, you're pretty sure you know how my unit works better than me? 🤣🤣

I don't have any problems connecting to WiFi. It works great, as always. And it's been a few weeks on A10.

So you decide if it's my good WiFi or your faulty unit. 🤪🤪🤪

  • I don't have any significant wifi issues either. The range seems a bit lower in terms of what the icon is showing, but the actual range around my apartment is pretty much the same for me.

No frequent reconnections or password issues either.

Which makes me wonder whether there are different hardware versions out there, or whether it's specific to certain network settings.

  • They disabled Camera 2 Api in this update.

To add to the offense, recently during a trip it started to lose battery at rougly 1% per 3-5 minutes and the phone was noticeably warm. No apps were running. Had to restart the phone.

I used to be able to use the phone while on the road without worrying about the battery. Right now even opening facebook for 7 minutes and paying using NFC causes the battery to drop from 100% to 96%. That's not normal. I can't give the pre-Android-10 figures, but I'm sure it wasn't that bad, otherwise I would've noticed.

Nokia ruined a perfectly good phone that I expected to serve me at least another 1.5-2 years. Brand loyalty shattered.

Yesterday I gave up and did a factory reset. As expected it seems to have solved none of the issues. WiFi range is still terrible and random battery drains are still there - I charged the phone to 100%, restarted it and left it idle with glance display on. After 7 hours it dropped to 65%! 5% per hour is certainly not normal, it used to be ~1.5%. Battery usage listed on the "show battery usage" page adds up to perhaps 6% total. So where did the remaining 29% go? WTF is this phone doing?

  • It's a screen, phone is not go to deep sleep because of Glance View and this drain battery. This is not normal of course, but after update to Android 10 Glance View eat battery 3-4% per hour. Hopefully they will fix this with next update.

  • Regarding battery drain, my Sirocco doesn't have similar symptom. My Sirocco is not new, experienced OS upgrade twice since 2018.

Attached is my battery usage. I seldom touch my phone today, and battery consumption for around half day is 9%.

I recommend to check "battery usage" as

Settings > Battery > top right corner > Battery usage > top right corner > Show full device usage

  • If you have Glance View configured to always on?

It's about 5% in my case. Before upgrading to A10 it used to be much less, around 1.5%. I doubt we'll see another update. This A10 release was a dumb PR "look, we support your phone after 2 years" move and I'm 99% sure they are done with supporting Sirocco.

This is the usage after 7 hours of always-on display during the nighttime (1 am - 8 am):

"show full device usage" (as you can see it managed to drop to 64% during this minute)

The percentages add up to 9%. Where did the other 26% go, I ask?

After 30 minutes it was already down to 59%. I didn't do anything fancy, I restarted it once and then it was just laying on the couch with always-on display on. This is unacceptable.

Guessing that perhaps "your phone companion" might be the culprit (it's MS software...) I uninstalled it, restarted the phone and put it in my pocket. Seems to have been losing ~2% per hour just sitting in my pocket, I honestly can no longer tell if this is good or not. I honestly do not remember the usage for A9 (because I never had to worry about it).

A10 is utter trash and Nokia won't do anything about it - I guess this is "planned obsolescence". Thanks for shattering my ~20 year old brand loyalty.

@HMDLaura we would appreciate Nokia taking action. This was an expensive FLAGSHIP phone and the way we ended up is unacceptable.

  • Hello again。

This is the other battery usage under "Always on" at Glance display duration. I kept this configuration between 8:00AM and 12:00PM JST today. Battery consumption for this 4 hours is from 85% to 74%. Not so high.

My last capture shows 91% at 00:45AM, and no recharging since then. Until 8:00AM, I had set 10sec at "Grance display duration" and battery consumption under this configuration was from 91% to 85%.

Comparing battery consumption between 10sec and "Always On", "Always On" is surely battery drain. But I don't think that it is pretty critical issue in my case.

    - Around 1% consumption/hour under 10sec

    - Around 3% consumption/hour under "Always On"

I feel this level of increment is pretty rational.

  • I was chatting to support: They are would not do anything about GCam support on android 10, they offer to bother developers of 3d party cameras not them

    Hi @user1540332007793,

Of course, because GCam is only for Google phones, not Nokias.

    Hi @Jote and @espio999,

Thanks for sharing, it's odd that your phones both behave differently regarding battery consumption. One reason that the consumption after reset is often poor is because the adaptive battery app has toe relearn what you use often in order to give more runtime to those apps, but in the early days after reset it doesn't know this so it gives lots of runtime to everything, hence faster battery drain. I think you can see the same effect whenever installing a new app.

So, did the battery life improve after a few days, or a week or so?

    Cheers 🙂

    Bluetooth and WiFi:

It even got worst after the July update.

I only can connect Bluetooth ones. After that it does not connect anymore!

It only connects after a reboot. (Why? Would love to know that)

I even (re)tried to reset all WiFi and Bluetooth connections via the system settings - reset.

But does not solve it, and I refuse to do a factory reset ( done that and lost data, passwords, settings,...took me days to get it back working)

Oh, I thought that was something I'd done, when I get in my car, no phoned found, I have to manually connect. Put my headphones on and the same thing happens.

I'm suspecting my 4g disconnection issue is down to a buggy security patch from some time ago also

  • How did you get that data usage speed on top of your screen. I don't have that option.

This July update didn't fix anything for me. The worst offenders (terrible WiFi range and battery drain (seems to be display-related)) are still there. I wonder what the brand of my next phone will be.

  • Send my Sirocco via Nokia Care Center across Europe, to fix the First Android 10 Update. It came back to me with Android 8 installed. Great Job... . After the update to Android 10 every Reporter error was still there. Than the second update was available. Hope...but my phone still have problems to connect bluetooth. Maybe Wi-Fi connection is a bit better, but not as good as with Android 9. Phone also restarts randomly. Also during the night. Woke up Last night with Nokia start-up-sound. I'm done with this. 400 bucks flows down the drain... No need to fix ist, dear HMD.

    Hi @Winston Smith,

I know this is small consolation but at least you didn't pay full price (double what you paid).

I'm sure that HMD will fix these issues, it will just take much longer than is reasonable to wait.

    Cheers 🙂

  • Be aware when upgrading to Android 10 that RAW camera capture has been disabled. If you use any camera software except what comes with the phone, there is a good chance it will stop working. NOKIA has STILL done NOTHING to fix the issue yet continues to bring out useless other updates
