Nokia 5.3 has Low Blue Light mode (Certified by TÜV Rheinland)

Hi Nokia Mobile fans,

we want to inform you about the Low Blue Light mode on Nokia 5.3 (TA-1234, TA-1227, TA-1229 and TA-1223) .

What is blue light?

In short, blue light is a color in the visible light spectrum that can be seen by human eyes. The human eye perceives only the Visible Light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is represented by the colors violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. Blue light has the shortest wavelength, which means it produces a higher amount of energy.

Since blue light passes through the cornea and lens before reaching your retina, it may affect health in various ways, such as itchy and red eyes, headaches, blurred vision and poor sleep. As a result the display industry has developed solutions to limit and reduce blue light. One of these solutions is the Low Blue Light mode.

How to enter the Low Blue Light mode?

You can easily enter the Low Blue Light mode on your Nokia 5.3 via

Enter Settings -> Display -> Night Light -> Turn on

Take care of your eyes

There are simple tricks to take care of your eyes:

  • Take frequent breaks when starring at a screen for a longer time
  • Look at distant objects to relax your eyes
  • Do some Eye exercise (e.g. Eye rolls) 

Take care of you and your eyes :)

    Thanks for the timely reminder, I imagine that many people around the world are spending more time looking at smartphone screens than normal at the moment.

    Please can you give more detail about the "Certified by TÜV Rheinland" statement? Does this apply to HMD's specific solution or to Android One, or Android in general? Is the certification only applicable to specific models? Can you provide is with a copy of the certificate?

    I'm actually very surprised that "Certified by TÜV Rheinland" was included, because it inevitably leads to someone asking to see the certificate 😉

    Hi @HMDLaura, thanks for this. I am writing this comment after turning on the " Night-light schedule" in the device settings. I forgot to do it after a factory reset.

    I'll also be interested in knowing more about the certification and which Nokia devices were certified by the organization? Is it all devices individually? Or is it that the supplier of displays holds the certification? Or is it that the software optimization which decides what level of yellow light to use is certified?

    And I agree with @madbilly. Sitting at home means it is mostly screens in front of the eyes. For me, it is either the TV, the phone or the PC monitor. Thanks really for the reminder. I should spend some time on the roof without bringing my phone along :)

    2-3 Quiz ( Small Exam ).

    100-200 pages reading material.

    All these for everyday.

    ---Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur.

    I have 6 hours of screen on time on Mobile, 8 hours of screen on time on iPad, 2-3 hours on laptop. I completely forgot about my eyes. So thank you again.🙂

    If I have not mistaken, night light was introduced along with the Android Oreo update.

    So I believe the first generation Nokia Android phones were not certified.

    That might be right, good thinking. Still, we don't actually know what this certification is or what it applies to. I hope that @HMDLaura comes back with some information otherwise I'll be pretty disappointed.

    Or probably the default Google's Night Light feature already has been certified by TÜV Rheinland, so it would already include the first gen phone, but who knows?

    So it's only the 5.3 which has been certified. 😒

    @HMDLaura, I'm sure you only posted what was handed to you by the marketing team, but please feedback to @tim.m it's pretty disappointing for us to read headlines like "Low Blue Light mode (Certified by TÜV Rheinland)" only to discover that only a single model out of 39 (I think, including China and US variants) is actually certified by TUV, and that model can't actually be bought yet AFAIK.

    If I'm generous, the TUV certification applies to less than 10% of the current range, so if HMD aren't careful this can actually be considered to be misleading advertising, e.g. in the UK:

    You must describe your product accurately. This means if you make a claim about your product, you must be able to prove what you say.

    This post could be considered to be misleading advertising because it implies that the TUV certification applies to all phones made by HMD, when in fact it doesn't. IMO HMD should update the first post to say that only the 5.3 is currently certified by TUV, or remove this thread altogether.

    I believe @madbilly has reached the correct summary. Even I spent a good time filtering through their website to find any other Nokia phones being certified and so far I have found none other than the variants of Nokia 5.3.

    It is disappointing that such a claim was made by HMD. As long as this wasn't posted in the Nokia 5.3 sub-section, it clearly applies to ALL of the HMD's products which have the night light option and I believe that is 100% of their offerings on Android.

    At this point, somebody at HMD has to prove (with the certificate) that their night light option is certified by TÜV. Else it is a lie. I'm sorry, but that's how it is. IDK why HMD seems to be doing so many things wrong these days. This positive certification of 1 device is now a negative news all because of the claim that's made in this thread.

    Waiting for shubh mahurt may be. This phone was about to launch at MWC20 in feb but delayed and launched in march if i'm not wrong. In last 4 months many brands launched so many phone even when everyone was suffering from pandemic. But don't know for what nokia is waiting for. Just now I read that Nokia is planing to launch 5.3 with one more feature phone Nokia 150.

    This feature of lowering down the blue light is very helpful to maintain the quality of eyes. Exercise for eyes mentioned in contents is also very helpful. it shows that Nokia is not only connecting people but also taking care of their health, especially eyes...

    I will also put an article about how to take care of eyes and which mobile model helps to reduce the fatigue of mobiles light.

    I want to know when the Nokia 9.3 or Nokia 10, which I have been waiting for a few years, will be released. The Nokia 9 in my hand can no longer be used normally, just to wait. I'm disappointed every time I see a bouncing ticket😓
