Ive noticed that the Nokia 8 seems to problems with the GPS. It is very sluggish and sometimes gets stuck or jumps wildly around.

Ive noticed that the Nokia 8 seems to problems with the GPS. It is very sluggish and sometimes gets stuck or jumps wildly around. I'm playing locationbased games this really messes things up.


Problem is both with Android 7.x and the Android 8.x BETA.

Easiest way to notice the problem is to take a bus/tram and the GPS will go everywhere but where you are.

This has not been a problem with any other phone for the last 5 or 6 years.

Rebooting the phone seems to fix the issue for a awhile but the accuracy is still not on par even when comparing to 4-5 year old phones.

  •  I also have problems with the GPS on my Nokia 8. Sometimes it takes 30 minutes to get a fix. Sometimes it is faster, but even then if feels slower than phones I have had in the past. Using latest update (Android 7).

  • I have the same issue. Sometime I don't get my location.
  • No issues here with mine and I use GPS a lot for navigation. I'm on the Oreo beta but had no issues with nougat either. Perhaps your phone is faulty, I would speak to whoever you purchased it from and get an exchange.
  • No issues here either, N 8 on Oreo Beta, as above, phone must be faulty.

  • Faulty GPS at 2017 ... For me it is highly unlikely.

  • Don't rule out a faulty GPS or GPS antenna, the fact that other people are having no issues with the GPS on their devices would suggest this probably isn't a software issue. The op has tried both nougat and oreo and has issues with both. This suggests a hardware fault with the phone meaning it needs to be exchanged or repaired, with any device new or old things can go wrong with them. A modern smartphone is a complicated device, the issue could be a faulty component, bad solder joint or an internal antenna connection.
  • Since the problem goes away after a reboot i think this is a software issue. Im pretty sure many people dont use gps as much as i do (2-5h active gps everyday) so therefore the problem might not appear for other users.

  • I bought a Lumia 900 at the launch and it had a microphone issue, causing eco during the call, and this was corrected via software.


    If a hardware is faulty, the problem persists no matter what. 


    I could not live with this issue on such an expensive phone ( by expensive I mean 690 Euros on the 6Gb version ) so I returned the phone.  


    This broke my heart, but I keep following Nokia and hopping for better products.

  • For me a reboot does not help. The phone usually sees plenty of satellites -10 to 20 -(tested with both gps fix and GPS Essentials apps) very fast, but often fails to get a fix. Also the gps looses it's fix often. I will try a factory reset at some point and lett u guys know if thay helps.
  • I honestly think you must have some fault with your phone, a factory reset is worth trying before returning it for another phone. I use GPS myself everyday for a couple of hours a day. It never has a problem getting a fix and it has never lost satellite reception using Google maps for navigation. I'm on the Oreo beta and it has worked flawlessly for me.
  • A lot of people here are just saying that "my phone is fine". Well, good for you, but if it fine how did you end up here, and how it helps who has a bad phone?


    Still waiting for an answer from Nokia. 

  •  I did a factory reset. Did not install back all the apps I had (but most of them). So far the results seem promising, but I will have to test the GPS over a few days when actually navigating before knowing for sure.

  • I made a factory reset twice, and the problem was not solved.

  • The reason people are here who don't have a problem is because we are trying to help the people that do, that's what a community is about. If your device isn't working properly a factory reset is always worth trying. If it still doesn't work correctly after this then it probably isn't software and is likely a hardware problem in which case your device needs repairing or exchanging.
  • You missed the point. Stating that my device is working doesn't help. Suggesting factory reset for an android user, is at least childish. That's it. 


    Still waiting for Nokia to comment on this. 

  • How is a factory reset childish? It resets your phone and wipes all you user data restoring it to a factory imaged firmware. If your device then works after a factory reset then it has something to do with an app / software you have installed. If it doesn't work after a factory reset you have a hardware fault and will need servicing.

    People stating that they do not have a problem suggest that it isn't Nokia's firmware at fault here and that it works as intended. Meaning it is something specific to your device. A factory reset will help to diagnose your problem, it's the first thing the service centre will do and if that doesn't resolve it they will then re-flash your firmware in case it has become corrupted and then test again. If it still doesn't work they will then put it down to a hardware fault.
  • Twisting my response won't make the phone work. If you can read, you'll see that what I said is the suggestion is childish, because of where it was posted, not the reset itself. It is kind of the first thing you do before googling or searching something in forums.


    Now tell me, with all this effort to reply here, your are from Nokia aren't you? ;)

  • No I'm not from Nokia, I own a Nokia 8 like yourself, I'm just trying to help you.

    If you've factory reset it and it still doesn't work their is no more you can do with it yourself. You either have faulty hardware or a corrupt firmware. Either way you need to take it to a service centre for repair or exchange.
  • Well my not Nokia friend, so we're done here. I don't want your help, and I didn't come here for help. I just want to know what is Nokia saying about it. It was my question from the beginning. "Did Nokia say something?" that's all I want to know. I don't work there, I don't have friends there. I just want a reponse saying go to the store ( From Nokia, not from you) or wait for a fix. Is it that hard to understand that?

  • Wow, not sure their was any need for that. Why do you need Nokia to tell you to return it when it's obviously faulty. If it just needs a firmware flash a service centre will probably turn it around while you wait.
  • I can also confirm. Factory reset did not help. It seemed like it did for an hour or so.. but the problem is the GPS works ok sometimes. It's just slow and unreliable (it can loose the fix at anytime). I will take the phone to be repaired next week.
  • Nokia 8 is totally unusable for navigation with Google maps even when using it outside the car. I have just switched from Note 4 which was working flawlessly except the battery drained quicker. Both high accuracy and device only location modes lose gps fix almost every 15 minutes and it takes sometimes half an hour to recover. I use it Thailand if it makes any difference.
  • In my opinion if I had a phone with issues the first thing I would do would be to bring it back to the shop and have it serviced. Not asking on a forum for what it looks like a hardware fault... If everyone had the same faults than it would be something that Nokia should address. I do not have issues with GPS and with me many others. What do you expect Nokia to say except return it for a repair? Unless you expect this to be a widespread issue and hence either a software problems that Nokia does know about or a systematic hardware problem that Nokia is trying to cover up.
  • Everyone has tried to tell this person it's a hardware problem and to return it, but he is waiting for a representative from Nokia to say it. Another suggestion in the support app on your phone is an option to live chat, I suggest you try that if you want to speak to someone from Nokia about this.
  • Here's some update. Yesterday I disabled battery optimization for LocationServices which seems fixed the issue. Also earlier I disabled optimization for Maps. The Optimization menu is a drop-down in the top right corner under the Battery. It coincided with Google security update which also came yesterday. One or the other had fixed the problem.

  • Interesting observation their with the location services getting optimised, their are certain system functions that should not be optimised I wonder if the WiFi issue I have encountered is something along the same lines.
  •  I took the phone to be serviced at the shop I got the phone from because of the GPS problem. After 2 days I got the phone back. All they said they did was "update the phone to the latest operating system". I booted the phone and updated to Android Oreo. I also chose to start fresh with no old apps or settings.


    I have tested the GPS on 3 short (10 minutes) drives and the GPS has worked as it should. I will report back if the problem comes back, but so far it seems to work totally fine.

    Ik ben een trouwe Nokia gebruiker het brak me toen Microsoft het over nam.nu heb ik weer een Nokia 5 maar het is een beetje minder,ik ben naar de winkel geweest eerst werd er verteld dat de sim en netwerk moest worden gereset.gedaan de mensen maar nu is de GPS helemaal van slag.de kleine speelt Pokemon en al staan we op de plek de GPS zegt dat we er heen moeten lopen,met Google map is het niet normaal zo rijd ik en stopt toe dan rijd ik ineens in het water dan weer tegen de richting.is geen software fout.nu kan ik mijn toestel laten na kijken zegt ie je bent hem wel een week of 3 kwijt?.anno 2017 geen telefoon.ik zie wel of iemand mijn kan helpen met dit probleem.
