Camera Pro Update - Your experience

@AndyQ: Switch off the Shutter Sound (may be distinct in Photo and Video settings).
It's the first thing I do in every camera. There are some countries where you must play a sound when taking a picture, so this is enabled by default.
I hope you do not take too many videos of calm situations, because then you will realize that the famed OZO sound tends to pull up the microphone gain so much that you can hear all kinds of crumbling in your video.

@SuAlfons: Thanks, that's handy to know. Unfortunately that shuts of the sound for both still photos and video, and the sound certainly is useful feedback on a camera phone. Ideally there would be either separate "sound off" options for stills/videos, but even then it'd still be nice to have the option of an audible notification for video that blips just before shooting commences.

I mean, ideally the camera should never record its own shutter sound. It's not a hard thing to fix if anyone would have tested the app beyond just confirming it opens without crashing.

Nokia 8 should not record the shutter sound, and should not have the nasty crackling noise at the start of the (first) video recording. But the OZO surround processing is for my use far superior to anything I've heard from a phone so far (and better than most affordable camcorders).
- The audio can be edited along with the video later.A quiet day at the nearby lake and river, put together on the phone in Google Photos without too much effort:
The audio has a noise floor way below -45dB VU. The frequency spectrum appears well-processed without hissing (it records up to 18kHz when relevant).
I prefer to keep the ambient rumble and traffic noise along with the ducks and people talking and walking in this case.

Thanks for the detailed analysis Hans, we can always rely on you to look at things objectively.
Rumours (!) suggest that the 7.1 plus (X7) will be launched next week in China and will have a camera with OIS - the first since the 8. I hope this means that HMD have been working on fixing the problems we've been experiencing before they launch the X7, and they can retrofit the fixes to the 8.

Here's my review of this device after 3 months of use... Nokia has failed to bring competition.
The camera is atrocious, again I'm comparing it to my Xperia Z2 which is a 4-year-old device with a single lens.
The Nokia 8 has dual camera's and the hardware to accelerate its pictures, Nokia's camera UI is terrible, the noise reduction and picture quality are as bad as a 5MP camera in 2018.
The last great device that ever came out of this company was the Nokia N95 and since they have failed to bring anything to the table.
I used to be a Nokia fan and was so glad to see that they were making a comeback that I gave you guys a chance but I think I'll stick with the tried and trusted in future

Whilst there are problems with the camera of the Nokia 8, I strongly disagree that the last great device from Nokia was the N95. I'll go in chronological order from the release of the N95:
- N900
- N8
- (N950)
- N9
- 808 PureView
- Lumia 1020 Pureview
Unless you want a T9 slider form factor, in which case you're probably right.0 - N900
-
I've noticed a new behaviour recently - when using the main camera if I am moving around before I hold the camera still and then press the shutter button I find the image jumps instantly and recentres. It's as if the OIS is no longer gradually drifting back to the centre position, which used to be how it worked, but actually locked still when not quite pointing straight ahead. Has anyone else noticed this? In the past if you tilted the camera a bit then held it still then over the next couple of seconds you'd see the image gradually move as the OIS relaxed its earlier deflection.

Yep, several pages worth.0

Better start a new thread if you have further comments regarding HMD's camera app, or specific questions?
I'm still trying to figure out how the new forum is organised and how it works.

@hughmnyksj - if I recall correctly you mentioned audio and OIS trouble before the last pages in this long thread went missing?
I compiled a demo movie in Google Photos to show how it works on my Nokia 8 and why I'm (mostly) happy with the performance of HMD's camera app. - Please consider share a sample to show what does not work for you, in a new thread, maybe?https://youtu.be/jSycZ0Cf1Qs
(I still get nasty audio crackle during the first 5-10 seconds of the first video clip in a session - it's fine when it's 'warmed up' - and it is silly to have EIS permanently enabled on a camera that has OIS, but that's covered in several other posts. The stability of HMD's camera app has improved a lot with the montly Android updates, so app chashes are rare now, for my use).

Apparently you don't get notified of a new message via email either. I bet that'll kill some conversations.
The monthly updates didn't change the app itself and I'm not convinced Nokia does anything beyond implementing the security fixes. But maybe, I only ever had the app crash once or twice on me.1 -
@ignas you can turn on notifications for threads you've posted in manually: https://community.phones.nokia.com/profile/preferencesHowever, warning that you will quickly become overwhelmed if you posted in that thread with the competition for a trip to Dubai.

Hi I think these changes needed for camera app
1. Being able to use flash when using monochrome lens why we can't do that?
2. Being able to Using monochrome in the pro panaroma and beauty mode and again we can't do that either
3. Using monochrome for video recording which we can't do
4.Adding a longer Shutter time (at least 2s ) in the pro mode
Adding 1080p ( or 720p) 60fps option for video recording foor smoother filming .7 -
These are all really good questions, I hope HMD are reading.
2 -
Wow I didn't even realize that - what possible reason is there for not being able to use flash in monochrome? Surely it was possible with the original app? Guess that's another failure to add to the list.
I wonder how many of those will they fix in Pie.0 -

Adding 1080p ( or 720p) 60fps option for video recording foor smoother filming .I also hope HMD will release an update to use the full potential of the Nokia 8 camera hardware, but fear their focus is on virtual and augmented stuff.Did you notice Nokia 8 does not play back its own video recordings smootly?
It stutters and drops frames during playback even at the lowest 720p resolution.
- Try share to YouTube and watch on the phone or preferably on a Chromecast connected TV with >100Hz MPEG interpolation. It's been like this since launch so I suspect the display drivers or maybe some of the com.evenwell system stuff. Both my vintage Nokia N8 and Nokia 6 plays their 720p/30fps video recordings smoother than Nokia 8.--

Great work checking the technical details Hans! (and I managed to use a stuck draft too!).

Don't leave OZO on for thunderstorms, the rain is louder than the thunder

A clear use case for Ozo audio focus!

Hello, just such a stupid question. So when HMD updates the Android Pie camera, will the next updates work on Google Play? I do not really think that the app will be 100% functional and bugs will need to be fixed.0

Going forward I'd love to see a single app for all of the main devices so we receive updates the same as everyone else. It might make it easier to maintain for HMD as well.
However seeing as the leaked Pie update still has the same app, my expectations are really, really low.2 -
I use version 85.9.1124.31 and I have no compelling reasons compares to iphone 7, Samsung galaxy S7 and Google camera 5.1.018.177470874. Even with low luminance.0

what camera version is users on pie have, my camera shows version 86.9.1130.21 but the interesting thing is when I hold the app icon and go into app options then app info advanced then scroll down to store and tap on it it shows device not compatible with this version, but even more strange is if I go to google play on my pc to look at camera apps it tells me I have versionCurrent Version91.9.1133.80 installed1
-
I'm still on 8.1 and have 85.9.1124.31 in app info. However in play store it shows exactly the same as you show and describe.

I would like to have the option to turn off EIS. As others already have written it gives you a strange view, too close up , and causes wobbly videos at times. Theoretically I could use third party apps that have that option. But unfortunately it is not possible to record in stereo because Nokia has barred those third party from using the stereo microphones. I wish they would find a solution soon.0
