Hello! I just bought Nokia 8 and I was amazed of it's recording quality! However The audio quality is only excellent when using stock camera app. I do lot's of music stuff and many times I do not need video, only audio Recording. I tried different Recording apps but all of them sounds horrible. If I record same stuff in video it sounds great. I would like to know If there are solution about this. I would really love to use Nokia 8 to record stuff.

Thanks
Kmeex

I'm also looking for an audio recording app from Nokia that will utilize the OZO audio, I haven't bought the phone and looking into the LG V30 because it HAS a wonderful audio recording app, I have an interest in the Nokia but concerned about the lack of an audio recording app and also the lack of a built in radio, also, I'm not sure anyone reads this thread so we might be waiting our time here,

I bought Nokia 8 partially because of OZO Audio. I wanted a high quality surround audio recorder always in my pocket. Of course the feature doesn't exist! Such a shame.

The general purpose audio recorders on the market don't support surround sound either.

I asked Nokia support team, but the chat was hilariously absurd. They don't know even what it is, let alone be interested in feedback and feature requests. Not as if I didn't pay for it!

Nokia, please provide an app to record audio. Or at least an API for OZO recording and mixing from the 3 mics!

For your delight, my support chat with Nokia below. World class!

Let's each and everyone ask them about OZO audio recording until they have nightmares about it at night and finally plan for the feature!

Dear user1500800626920. Please follow and do what I said.
    1. Get a Nokia 8
    2. Open up camera apps in Nokia 8
    3. Select video mode in camera apps
    4. Select microphone option (it is next to the dual camera option Button.)
    (Choose rear and front mic)
    5. Select colour or Monochrome .
    6. Record the video
    7. Open your PC or laptop
    8. Download Freemake Audio Converter
    9. Import your recorded video to PC using usb cable.
    10. Open Freemake Audio Converter
11 . Find the video you imported
    12. Import it to Freemake Audio Converter
    13. Select Mp3
    14. Convert it to Mp3
    15 . Find the Mp3 converted
    16. Done.
  • So the workaround is to record a video then extract the sound for that on a computer. Better than nothing, but not great.

Some apps from Google Play can record stereo. E.g. Sony's Audio Recorder. They use bottom mic and rear mic. So if you want to record stereo, you may place the device rear side up on table.

Yes I am also forced to Use Sony's Voice recorder but Nokia should include their own as Sony's doesn't support OZO and I need Just audio recording as I record alot of lectures and then converting the video to mp3 is a hassle

Until an audio app appears, extracting the audio from video is obviously the way to go, but Freemake is not a solution I want to use, firstly because OZO is based on AAC audio and not MP3, and secondly because more than one major anti-virus provider won't let me download Freemake, which doesn't look as though it's on a secure site.
How about a simple proprietary Nokia audio extraction app?
The Sony app is stereo, but you can't adjust input gain. The AGC (automatic gain control) - no algorithms here - distorts live music horrendously.

    I am using Nokia 8.

Nokia should provide built in app for audio recording with OZO effect.

Hughmnyksj AudioRec has optional Automatic Gain Control, but as far as I know you can not store recordings to common storage area by it in Android 8, so they can be used by the app only.

But you can upload your recordings to cloud by AudioRec nevertheless.

    Hi Janis
Have just installed AudioRec Pro and it sounds great. Manual gain adjust is what I want, and it's here. I'll be testing it with my samba orchestra very soon.
Interestingly, the middle mic puts the sound from the mic inside the ear aperture bang in the middle of the sound picture.
I have been able to prove the resilience of the Nokia 8 mics while recording spatial-audio video right next to a repinique, a Brazilian drum with a very taught plastic head played - or rather slapped - with a 12" plastic stick that distorts horribly on lesser mics (e.g. the one in an iPad mini 4 or iPhone 7)...

     hi

    Hughmnyksj

I would very much like to hear your recordings could you pelase share them somehow tih me?

  • Use front camera while you are mainly focused in audio recording and set the video resolution to 480p i.e lowest quality (so that size of video is comparably small as you are concerned only with audio) for the front camera. Now just use VLC media player to strip off the audio in whichever format you like. If you want to how vlc is used to strip audio just google it or search in youtube.

I have made many great spatial recordings with my 8, including very noisy drummerd very close up. Outdoors, the OZO sound quality is awful at low volumes - there has to be something going on all the way round.
Concerts are usually good, but my 8 met it's Übermensch last Sunday: Seasick Steve plays so loud that OZO was totally distorted throughout the auditorium...
  • THE PROBLEM WILL NEVER BE SOLVED, SINCE NOKIA HAS A COMMUNITY, WHERE NEVER A NOKIA EMPLOYEE READS IT. TOO BAD!
  • THIS IS A TYPICAL CHINESE BEHAVIOUR, AND SO WE KNOW FOR NOW ON, NOKIA PHONES ARE NOT FINNISH ANYMORE

No update on this topic I suppose ?

I've been using surround OZO audio to record clips at loud concerts and I haven't been very impressed honestly. It sounds "processed" and has poor stereo separation compared to what I get with my old Nokia 830 (or Nokia 808 of course).

I've noticed that you can turn off surround and only use "front" mics which is probably just as well for concerts. I'll see if that works better the next time.

    @webvan ,
Nokia 8 OZO audio is linear below 10Hz where the Windows Phones and Symbian I've used rolls off before it becomes subsonic.
(Nokia 8 could benefit from a selectable high-pass filter, similar to the Lumia but that's another story).

Nokia 8 OZO always use all 3 mics and it's always surround (when the phone is held properly, horizontally). The focus on front or rear and left or right is done by comparing the phase of incoming sounds to establish the direction, then let the algorithms do their thing.
It's not perfect but the best I've heard from an affordable camcorder so far.
Please bring a good headset and test carefully - I prefer full surround in most cases to avoid some 'bubbling' artifacts in front and rear mode.

Thanks for the insight on Ozo. I did some testing at a piano concert and switched between Surround and Front (back of the phone in fact) and the Surround sounded better in the end. You can hear some "shifting", probably the phase analysis you mention. Still not a big fan of the result compared to what the Nokia 830 normally produces though (didn't have it with me). The 830 also has three mics but produces a 5.1 file, not a binaural rendering like the N8.

@petrus - thanks for the heads up!
