Hi everyone,

We recently produced an infographic which explains, in detail, the planning, work, and processes that the HMD team has to go through to make Android software rollouts happen.

I am keeping this post short, because I think the infographic does a much better, in-depth, job at explaining the workflow. But it would be great to know what you think about it.

  • Hi! I'm new! I just bought a Nokia 3 for my girlfriend TA 1028 SS. Turn it on, connect to WiFi and I get the update to Oreo 8.1 (v.4.4D - or something like that). I don't know if update it or not, I read a lot of comments with bad experience [the phone became sluggish, awful battery), very bad. Anyone from Argentina?
  • Any update on Nokia 6.1 plus

Could you please explain if Project Treble is live and is it already in use in Nokia?
@navs Project treble is mandatory for any phone which is originally shipped with Android 8 or higher. I agree that it would be good to know if project treble has been retrofitted to phones that were originally shipped with Android 7 (AFAIK Nokia 8 has not been retrofitted).
@todesurteil I wrote my post before I read yours, please excuse me if you thought I was trying to claim credit. I agree with what you wrote
@matteo.m , thanks for the reply, good to hear, I hope that this can be done soon, i.e. next few weeks (would be a nice thing to show at MWC ;) )
  • When will pie be cooked for the original Nokia 6 ??? I am eagerly waiting for the pie
  • Nice read. I hope the 2017 Nokia smartphones will get the Pie uodate sooner this year. ❤️

Well this is very interesting @matteo.m, I always wanted to know how we receive Android updates to our smartphones and what are the steps involved. I find this material to be very useful and appropriate for all users.  :)
Also as @madbilly said, about creating a live webpage which could show the status of updates at each stage for Nokia smartphones, this would be awesome.  ;)

@madbilly If Project Treble is present already then I guess we shouldn't see a delay in OS updates. The OS updates should come faster than the firmware updates.
  • Yet to understand
  • In which state Nokia 6 is?

If I may make a suggestion for the new updates of the next Android, list the models and write in a thread, and update it on a regular basis, for example where the update is during the process would calm down people and they would see the update is being worked on, for their model, and if there's a problem write what is going on. Receiving no info and keeping people in the dark about what is going on is not acceptable in my opinion, after all these people are your clients that have purchased your product(s) and services. Without them there's no salaries and no Nokia.

Treating us like we're a nuisance, so it seems, are what frustrates people and clients in any business. I always believe be open and tell and even show clients what is going on and I don't have problems or clients screaming at me. Posting this nice picture diagram won't help when the next android version is released, this year, maybe August or so. That's my opinion... use it don't use it, your choice. You will just end up with the same situation if you don't and loose clients in the process.

I know what I wrote here will fall on deaf ears, but so be it then...
I fully agree, it would be amazing to have this information.  :)
  • Thanks @petrus hopefully it can be done, then at least we know what's going on and that Nokia is busy with the firmware update for our device and if there's a problem we know about it.
  • Hi. Nokia is 2 still without Oreo. Is an update planned? No  information available.
  • Nokia 2 is under Beta labs

@navs "firmware" updates which people normally talk about are actually the OS version updates. True firmware updates are actually very rare. "Firmware" is a term which is misused a lot now and often incorrectly - it should normally mean software which is stored in a read-only memory (ROM) and can't be updated, at least not easily. This is why "custom ROM" is also a poor term, because a custom ROM can be easily erased and replaced!

I know that your use of the term firmware is not for the OS, but I think you're referring to the drivers and HAL, which are also not true firmware, but more like it than the OS.

Project treble definitely makes it easier to update Android, however we will always see a delay in OS updates because the chipset manufacturer and then HMD still have to make sure that the new OS update is fully compatible with their drivers and hardware, and if not then make any necessary changes.

We have the roadmap for pie updates! https://www.androidauthority.com/nokia-phones-android-pie-update-roadmap-945377/

Thanks NPU and Nokiamob for the tip.

@matteo.m it's a shame that HMD didn't decide to announce this here in the community forum, where your customers are.
  • I am using Nokia 8 and since 18th Jan it's told that android update is on, but till today nothing has come up. Is HMD again hiding something?????
  • My Nokia 5.1 Plus have become too buggy and irritating after the Pie update. Please fix it soon. And when will we get the January update?
  • After updat in pie to my nokia 6.1 plus i am facing lots of problem
    1. Lagging:- phone is not smooth as compared to android oreo.
    2. My YouTube app is not running good.
    3. Finger print not working properly many times it hangs.
  • As a buyer one thing i must say about nokia that it become worst than before i purchase 6.1 plus on the name and believe on nokia but i am totally disappointed by the phone and ur services other company give updates on time but its 26 and the security patch is still december its very frustrating...

i am facing alots of issues
    lagging
    battery drainage
    bluetooth auto on prob
    network issue
one slot giving only 2g network
    low sound in head speaker
    increased charging time
    screen touch respose lag
    etc etc 😠😠😠😠😠
    Phone become **** to me

if u really hear your customer problem and care for your customer its my humble request to you that give updates on time and give it after complete testing don't give it like beta testing because we r not fools and not kids who dont understand the good or bad difference and pls keep try to solve these prob abd the last thing is that some other models already gets the updates some days before but 6.1 plus doesn't so pls remember that its also ur device so dont forgot this device..
Do care for all devices it makes ur nake good and better because we r customers we make u big and if we r not happy so we also have the power to make u small by our dislikes..

    Take it positively..

You left out the part where HMD Global add in a special application that breaks all background tasks.
