My device is TA-1004. I tried everything I could and did not help. I've deleted apps using location, installed apps for compass calibration, but compass is still rotated 180 degrees. This is definitely the firmware bug that happened after the Pie update. I believe that the developers in Nokia will fix this bug soon, because the navigation during the walk shows that you are moving in the opposite direction.
I experienced the same problem with compass showing in the wrong direction. After the January Update I don't receive any location at all. It is shown grey on Google maps, in other apps it doesn't work either.

Gonna try safe mode and reset.
I had same problem even on Oreo, when Google Maps not recognized my location. I reinstalled whole app and my problem disappeared. You can try it. But now I have the wrinkles on my forehead because of reversed compass.
Same problem with compass when update android 9 . The compass wrong 180 degree . I haved tell this problem and ask HMD fix it , I waited 2 months from 12/2018 to update new firmware , but after update new patch in 1/2019 , HMD not fix this problem . I feel disappointed with HMD !!! Maybe I will not never buy HMD product in furure !!!
I reckon they have to fix it. The compass problem impacts every compass-dependent app the phone can run. If they don't, then they have to replace our phones. With devices that precisely match the same specifications as the Nokia 8 - or better!
The phone was previously great , however these last months feels quite weird strategic to me. Somewhere from now and a year forward many current Nokia 8 users/customers will start to look for a new phone. And HMD global isn't doing much to keep theses users happy. How many will buy a Nokia 8.2 if the last months memories from the 8.0 was a disaster?
* The compass being out of control, is just peanuts. I just got a little off track during a visit in brussels which I'm not familiar city to me. My company just got a bit irritated why I tricked them into the wrong way.
* Lagging with updates, the Android Security Bulletin — February 2019 is one of the most critical during Androids lifetime. Even more important than the previous bluetooth and Stagefright bugs. What are they waiting for? This would have easily been solved by LineageOS or someone who have read the Cathedral & the bazaar by Eric Raymond.
* And all the obvious bugs like the Camera controls being layered on each other. Why is the camera app so bad? Has anyone field tested in real life? Wouldn't it make sense that it keeps it settings, whether shooting in Manual modes or bokeh mode you want to keep the last active setting. Not start all over again next time you start the application.
Could someone at HMD please wake up please, you are not doing well enough to keep your current customers.
No official words about compass issue yet? I always rely on compass app to find direction for praying. I could bear it back at my hometown, but now that I'm currently overseas, it's really frustrating...

I don't recall seeing any mentions of the compass issue from HMD or Sarvikas, so whether it gets fixed in a couple of days (*cough*), next month or never is unfortunately completely unknown.
I like Nokia 8. It's a good phone. But bugs like compass bug that prevents apps using GPS/Navigation to full operate, it's failure. I am willing to wait for one-two months, if there will be still no compass fix, I will go to another brand. Users deserves reliability and Nokia in this point is failing at this time.
Another one with Compass fault since update. TA-1012. More than just a little **** at this as non of the star gazing/ astronomy apps now work properly. Not too impressed with Nokia so far and unless they up there game significantly I'll swap to another brand for my next phone. i chose Nokia because of pure Android and thought at the time it would be better phone that the Motorola offerings. Not so sure now.
@Jimmy You "have" 1 - 2 months "time" to wait? You are an optimist. We wait for a good camera-firmware about one year. And? No results. And with the compass - problem it will be the same. I'm afraid that will be the reality. 😭

I don't have serious problems with Camera app. Of course, it can be better but app is OK. If it will be reality, I regret Nokia and I will buy iPhone like previous. Nokia don't care about their users like they should and this is disappointing.
@Mick1965 I hope I didn't sound offensive towards you, never meant to. I'd say a whole lot of us did contact them and let them know about the problems. Yet here's how they act on it...
All well and good slagging off the company but if enough people do not contact Nokia care it will not be flagged as a problem.
I agree. If one has a problem, one should first contact Care. Even if you don't think they will help you. The more people report the same bug, the more chance HMD Global programmers will eventually hear about it. As far as I know no programmer of HMD Global uses this forum. This forum is only for customers to help each other!

You r right but; we entered the beta pie program and reported compass etc issues before. We contact nokia care about compass issue before. But nothing changed. i think nokia coders must look after this forum for doing a good job. in this forum there are a lot of bug report and this can be more usable than beta program. They can only read our bug reports.
This compass issue effect a lot of useful apps. İ like nokia 8 but they must solve compass and video autofocus problem as soon as possibble

Of course I agree. But that doesn't help. I am not working for HMD Global (unfortunately). All the people who are angry, disappointed about one or other bug have to contact Care and report the bugs instead of complaining on this forum. And only then there is a (little) chance ...
I certainly don't blame you (or other people like you) as you EXACTLY did what I think EVERYONE should do. But how many people really do that? I started to ask for support on the autofocus problem: https://community.phones.nokia.com/discussion/42125/nokia-8-pie-camera-app-focus Less than 20 people agreed ... Not a massive appeal, really! (And yes, I first contacted Care ... and I got this reply:
Thank you so much for your feedback, it is really appreciated and it will be taken into consideration by our developer team.
So far, this is how the software is designed, maybe in a future update it will be added, in order to be more friendly with the consumers!)
