Here's my conversation today at noon with Nokia Support (if it wasn't so sad, you could laugh about it ...)

    They're robots. Clearly.

    Very sad.
For reference and for what it is worth, the compass in my Nokia 6 works as usual after its pie update.
My Nokia 8 goes to the drawer in a couple of weeks, sadly. I want voice guided navigation to work when the motorcycle season starts.

If we can't get through to the technicians via the official support channels to have such firmware issues escalated and resolved within a reasonable timeframe, and nobody in charge seems to read the comments in this forum - then what @matteo.m - is it all just marketing channels?

At least we can use these forums to protect people from wasting their money!

Nokia is dead. Let it rest (albeit with an even bigger 💩 stain, courtesy of HMD Global).

@Mick1965 I hope I didn't sound offensive towards you, never meant to. I'd say a whole lot of us did contact them and let them know about the problems. Yet here's how they act on it...
No offense taken, I just wanted to be clear on whether, the fault had been re-reported to Nokia care, letting them know that the latest update has not fixed the issue.

As already said above, this forum is not read by the developers.
We can cuss, curse and generally slag off Nokia for not fixing a fault but ....unless we report the fault via the official channels it will not be heard.. or fixed.
  • Øv! I really did think they might get a bit right this time. I bought this phone for OZO in the video, but 1080p sucks because of the image stabilization. Also wanted a true compass to use advanced apps (like Geopark Odsherred with some really nice renditions of the Ice Age in what you might call VR) that  only seem to run on "flagship" phones. And Galileo to be ready for when it kicks in for real...

Yes, it was reported! Several times by several people! In the beta period as well as afterwards! Fix? No ...

Please note, if you follow the advice, the phone will most likely come back from the workshop with a 'No errors found' - their diagnostics software only checks if there is output from all sensors, not how the output is interpreted by the firmware and operating system.
    - It would cost me around €80 handling fee to get the phone back with that verdict if the warranty claim is made at the local electronics superstore.

Instead I consider visit HMD's headquarter in Finland during the summer and hand the Nokia 8 back.
Quality management in a modern company with subcontractors is always for the headquarter to manage, employees and people at subcontractors do what they are told to do, nothing more and nothing less.
(Don't get me started, I was involved in implementing ISO9001 standards at a subcontractor for two years, long ago).

  • @ Hans I got the same bullshit from HMD this morning. You can pick me up on your way to Finland... No seriously, I think it's because I wrote "broken compass", which triggers some kind of physical damage alert in the robot. The Chat could easily be a robot, and maybe the same applies to Support?

  • I ran the *#*#372733#*#* test and got odd results. The selfie camera failed, but it takes perfect pictures. The compass passed, but the test starts with a red circle with a black "hand" twitching all over the place. If that is the test they run, then we are veritably screwed.

Count me in. I may not be able to physically join you in this endeavour, but my soul will be there with you. I wish so much I could take this trip and shove the device up their uncaring dark places...

About the same here where the black line shows at least about one direction. I think these are the raw data of the sensor, which are then processed by the BS - and exactly this interface seems to be the problem with the N8: apparently Android Pie is not able to read or pass on the compass raw data correctly ...

    You're all correct:
I feel another soapbox moment coming on, I will try to keep calm and not shout at HMD too much...!

    @Hugh Matthews
In the FQC camera test you have to work quick with the shutter and the back button to complete the test for all 3 cameras before it times out.
The line in the red circle for the compass test is nerveus also on my Nokia 6. The compass test is successful when the line has rotated more than 90 degrees relatively to the screen, in any direction, and for whatever reason.

I don't know how to explain the current compass issue for a CPO or CEO, but better avoid 'broken' and maybe try 'mirrored' or 'upside-down'?

@user389 Hans that's a good point: "broken" is not explanatory enough, we need to make sure they have the detail. However, I'm sure that everyone in this thread when they've contacted support has given detail.

I wrote on Nokia support via email on the page you mentioned. I believe the bug with the compass will be taken into account and will be corrected soon. As for the Camera app, I noticed that photos occupy a lot of space and after editing photos via Google Photos app, they take almost 50 % less space in storage. There is needed a better taken photos compression. Also, when video recording the camera is often re-focusing scene, that is privilege of low-end, NOT high-end devices. So that camera app needs update too. Nokia must be more active in bug fixing and apps optimization.

I won't be so optimistic: They promised me that already on 17 January (https://community.phones.nokia.com/discussion/comment/72587#Comment_72587) and what happened? Exactly: Nothing!

Sarvikas is quite possibly also a robot.

Well, I believe they've made a try to fix it, because in my case the compass was very shaky and didn't recognize any direction, now it's stable and the only "small problem" is that it's 180 degrees wrong. I have high expectations of this problem being fixed in a couple of next updates. They did fix the nfc and double camera icons issues, for their defence.
  • Actually, now I checked it again and it broke like In the previous update

    @madbilly ,
I'm not sure the details regarding the compass issue, and the big impact it has on Android's AR in Maps and elsewhere, has been correctly reported and understood by HMD's technical department during the beta test and later.
    Please keep calm and positive!

#JackSparrow #treasurehunt #nokia8 - and ask what the price is and when the contest ends? :-)

@user389 you're probably right, a visual demonstration would be best.

I haven't watched PotC for a while so I'm afraid the Jack Sparrow and Treasure Hunt reference is lost on me... or I'm being dense this morning! Probably the latter! :D

    Cheers

Edit: @Seryip the camera icons aren't blurred anymore? That's a pleasant surprise. I didn't know about the NFC issue you mentioned, unless I forgot. Quite possible today!
  • I have the same compass issue since Android pie on my Nokia 8.
Hope they fix it by a software update.
  • I also have this problem since Android Pie, hope HMD fix it ASAP.
  • I am in the UK and have not received the latest Pie update yet. I wonder if the rollout has been suspended pending fixes to the compass and other ongoing issues. Maybe I will attach a mirror to my phone when using navigation apps.

Not a chance mate, they rolled out the last version of it and it wasn't fit for purpose IMHO but they still pushed it. This new build is exactly the same but with a couple of features added so you could argue it is actually in improvement.
  • Guys, I found something but don't know if it make any sense to someone, but the compass does work for a minute or so after every restart then it goes haywire.
