    Looks like the camera update for Nokia 8 is not a priority, they don't have an eta for it. 😞

    Since yesterday, there is a new HMD camera app:
    January 28, 2019

    This version is still not available in Play Store and also is newer version compared that used in Nokia 7.1/8.1.

    Maybe this will be our new version or for Nokia 9.

    Of course, this was the first thing I did. :)
    But it says, no camera connection, or something like this.
    But there is Pro mode, unlike the previous camera app from HMD that I use right now.

    @Jivco No Pro mode? What version is that? Mine is 86.9.1130.21 (stock?) and it has Pro.

    I use the camera app from Nokia 7.1. Side loaded. But there isn't a Pro mode, just manual mode. Maybe just because this app is not intended for our phone.

    I have just been out and about with my 8 and find that photos still don’t get tagged properly. To get the right location tagged I had to go into Maps first. That’s no bloomin’ good. I don’t just want to tag which town I’m in. I take 100s of photos all around my beautiful part of Denmark, and frequently either want to go back to exactly the same spot or tell folks where they can get the same shot.

    I have just re-reported the above - and other issues (yaawn) - to Support. PLEASE CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR PHONES TAG CORRECTLY AND REPORT TO SUPPORT IF NECESSARY.

    Support suggested a few resets, which I followed to the last detail. Now my stock camera doesn't tag photos at all, while my Gcam app does. Mystery?

    Check the camera app permissions, or delete the camera app cache and data and set up fresh? (Long press the camera app icon and tap the pop-up menu for quick access to its settings).

    The location has been a few km wrong in at least one photo since the Pie update. I blame the upside-down compass confusing Android's location services.

    yes i strongly believe this could be a test version for nokia 8. I hope to be and soon have new camera app.

    I tried that Hans, and it didn't work. If I take a photo in a Gcam I get a location that is often 20 metres out, but when I stand on the same spot and open Maps, my position is spot on (pardon the pun). The stock app is set to tag location but it doesn't.
    I think you are probably right about the compass messing things up.

    Latest report. Reset camera with long press on icon, info, clear cache, disable. Return icon to home screen and reset to default settings. Reinstate tagging. Outside house and 3 pictures in succession are tagged accurately. Walk 50 metres and the same location is tagged, same thing after 50m in same direction, next 50m in the direction I came from and the tag is from where I had just been. This is the stock app. Walk 150m back to house and tag is still 150m out. Take photo with Gcam app and location is spot on. So this doesn't seem to be caused by the phone ...

    Unbelievable... I've stumbled upon a Twitter comment showing a photo, presumably taken on Nokia "6.1"


    Am I too tired or is that photo at least a few magnitudes better than what would be achievable with our lousy camera software? I'm amazed by the difference in details that that picture has, even at maximum zoom AND considering the probable recompression that Twitter applies to uploaded images! Like... WTAF!!!

    @user389 your pic also retained great, clear details, unlike the terrible smudges from Nokia 8 as soon as you start zooming in!

    I can only hope you didn't troll me there and it's really from your Nokia 6 (instead of coming later saying that the pic was actually shot on a Nokia 8), as I'd go mad about my device being defective at a hardware level or something...

    It doesn't matter really, because photo you linked to was shot using Nokia 6.1 and his photo was shot with Nokia phone from 2017. It's clear to me that Nokia mid-range phones which were released in 2018 definitely came with much better imaging algorithms. It's understandable if HMD doesn't care to update imaging algorithms for Nokia 5 & 6 from 2017 because they were cheaper, mid-range phones, but not releasing that kind of update for flagship Nokia 8 is a punch in a face for its users, since that phone continues to be plagued with various camera issues.

    But even Hans' Nokia 6 (2017) takes so much clearer images than the Nokia 8... The level of details, discernable when you zoom in, is so much better than our supposed "flagship" which terribly smudges them, basically lipstick on pigs lips. It's an astonishing state of affairs..

    HDR 8s the problem for the details. Turn it off and is much better. My friend has Nokia 7.1 and I don't see difference with Nokia 8

    Thanks for your photo samples, guys. It'd be awesome to have the same scene shot on both Nokia 8 and one of those mid-range models, in the same conditions, from the same spot, etc. Only that would conclude whether the 8 is really behind, from an objective perspective.

    Personally, I can see the samples taken on the 8 as inferior to the 6 series samples above, the details are much better defined in the mid-range samples, specially when compared at maximum zoom (but not only that).
    I have to stress this: it's just my personal opinion and observations, do not throw stuff at me please! Debate, for sure, express your opinions, but limit to that :smiley:

    Funny thing, I opened @jdan 's photos on my computer, I'd say those pics are pretty comparable to what the mid-rangers can achieve. Up until now I've mainly compared photos on my phone, where curiously enough the quality seems fairly better from the mid-rangers.

    Either I need my eyes checked, or I've turned into a photographic snob, but i still think the mid-rangers achieved at least slightly better results overall, even for the accuracy/crispness of the details such as straws, thin objects, wires, contours, etc. :/

    Exactly similar circumstances ... very difficult. You have to have an equally steady hand to make a picture too!
    But more imporantly: what is the use of comparing?

    Fact 1
    You have a Nokia 8. If you think it is making lousy photographs at the moment, what else can you do than sell it?
    Stop making photographs until there is an update?
    Or try your luck with one of the numerous gcam ports?
    If you do the latter and you find something, please impress other Nokia 8 owners with your spectacular photographs so that they too download that FREE gcam port and benefit from your search.

    Fact 2
    Thanks to magazines and customers who criticized the camera, the price dropped to 299 euros one year after its release. And now I have a wonderfully powerful phone that takes great pictures!
    (I am not really interested in low light photographs. I knew when I bought the phone that this was the most important drawback of the camera.)

    Fact 3
    If you resell the phone you have to drop your price to 200 or less euros as a new one can be bought for 300 euros - with a 2-year guarantee!

    I tried my best when in Barcelona to talk to people about fixing problems with existing models, but all the people there were focussed on new models. They didn't seem to have the "maintenance" team there and couldn't really tell me who's responsibility that was.

    Anyway, they have asked me to send a list of Nokia 8 issues so please remind me what all of the problems with the Nokia 8 camera app are (actual bugs, not just "it's poor" and variants thereof, as that is a pretty difficult problem for a software engineer to address).
