At home in the comfortable armchair, the blue 'fan' in Google Maps is often displayed correctly at first. I reckon it has to do with with the ~40 visible WiFi routers and Bluetooth devices from my neighbors, that Google has mapped and use for both location and compass, until it picks up real GPS and magnetometer data.
After I sent again a long email with a detailed error description expressing again my annoyance about the broken compass, the request has obviously finally landed with someone who is not a robot and actually suggested something new - see below

Same problem here still not fixed with february update: compass not working properly, and camera exposure sometimes works, sometimes not. Model TA-1004 00WW_5_140

Didn't solve the problem either ...
The support suggested to me to try this method a month ago. It did not work then, and as I can see - it does not now, after the latest firmware update.
Final answer from Nokia Support after extensive mail traffic with numerous suggestions for solutions, all of which did not bring any improvement (who would have thought that):
Ok. @martin.fd , would you mind if I'll ever shove the above screenshot in discussions on Twitter, if such a context will arise? Just in case I'll encounter some stubborn apologists or to showcase their don't-give-a-rat's-ery and the uselessness of their "support" robots.
Well, dear Nokia team, know that the compass bug has NOT BEEN FIXED in the February update, and that the camera exposure works sometimes and sometimes not (meaning that when you slide the sun icon next, to the viewfinder square, sometimes it changes exposure, and sometimes it does nothing). I know i am repeating myself but this REALLY has to be fixed, it can't wait no longer. Model TA-1004 00WW_5_140
They told us in January, that with the Februrary-Security-Patch will our Nokia's 8 arrive a "perfect" Update for Camera-firmware and the other problems, (Compass and so on). And, what us the result. No "better" camera, no correctly working compass. This is the "reality". And that's why I shall a buy a Nokia 9 Pure View. NO, NO and NO! 😡 I cann't/ will believe any more. Only hole words. 😡😡😡
Sorry, you can write here so often you will. It is the same with the "camera-problems". It will be not changed. So often as we had wrote here and to the support, it isn't to understand that we have no result or any information from HMD. And, I believe, it will be not changed.
It is 1st March and I still do not have a February patch. I believe this is because they are working on fix the compass problem in the next security update.
**** I ended up flipping my phone when using the compass couple of times for directions when I visited Hong Kong last week. When will there be a fix?? 😑
After february update, the compass its not working, and obviously that Nokia knows it! The contact center always say something positive. They dont know if the issues Will be resolved.
Nokia knows that Nokia 8 has bugs on the camera, on the compass and so on. We never know if Nokia Will correct those issues. Contact center Will always say what we want to hear, and hope that time Will make us forget!
I've just been out in the gorgeous hills of Middle Denmark with my 8 running with ViewRanger topographical maps. Not only is the lack of compass a pain in the proverbial when trying to find your way, the GPS takes absolutely ages to get its bearings.
... running with ViewRanger ... the GPS takes absolutely ages to get its bearings.
I don't know Viewranger that well (used to have it on my Symbian Nokia 5230 long time ago ;-) ), but e.g. in "Locus Map" you can set the speed at which you want to switch between compass and GPS data ... maybe Viewranger offers this option as well?!

HMD has only ears for his "grandious" Nokia 9.
