  • about "compass issue" nokia's and HMD's attitude is weird.. actually same weirdness exist about camera autofocus issues. because this issues not that hard issues for a developer. i am knowing coding and i know that this issues dependend on using wrong perimeters when coding drivers. solving this issues very very easy for a developer becuse you will not make driver from zero!! you only adjust true perimeters in the driver than all problems will solve.

i think HMD is never interested in this issues.

    @KingOmer03 ,
It's not trivial to code the firmware for a compass when it has to work with augmented reality, and also has to work correctly for users located in both the northern and southern hemisphere.

Feel free to read my speculations on page 3, 4 etc.

    Two possible scenarios:
1: Management requested changes to make the Nokia 8 augmented reality compliant, but failed to properly test the changes before release.

2: An employee at a subcontractor made unauthorized changes (and the firmware was still not thoroughly tested before release).

In any case, it seems the supporters at HMD are not allowed to / are unable to create trouble tickets and escalate issues that are reported by users, to any sort of quality management at HMD or elsewhere.

All I've seen so far are 'go fish' (wait and see) replies, sadly.

... running with ViewRanger  ... the GPS takes absolutely ages to get its bearings.
I don't know Viewranger that well (used to have it on my Symbian Nokia 5230 long time ago ;-) ), but e.g. in "Locus Map" you can set the speed at which you want to switch between compass and GPS data ... maybe Viewranger offers this option as well?!

I'll check that with them. They actually have an 8 at their office. Great app, VR.

Same problem here, I thought my hardware was faulty but then I found this thread.
Hope to hear from them soon, it's a shame
  • Hello
I have the same issue since Pie update and it's a very serious problem the GPS beeing a critical feature.
Such a problem is not acceptable from Nokia.

The compass has not worked since the 11/12/2018 beta release.
  • Yes, compass is not working since Pie Beta update. I wrote on Nokia support to report compass bug, but I did not see any replies at all.

    Nokia? Lol
From old Nokia we, as users, have only brand's font and speculative talks about quality.
During last 4 month this "new" old Nokia doesn't public any press release concerning problem with compass
P.s. Nokia 8 is my first and last new Nokia's phone. Because I see only juho sarvikas barefaced lie and no any attempts to solve real problem with compass

May people reported it in the beta feedback app and they still did nothing.
  • What APP you use to compass?
    Try compass Galaxy.
  • I tried several apps and Google maps and the North keeps moving.

It is the hardware compass that is wrong not the apps that use it.
  • Yes, firmware after updating on Pie caused breaking compass on Nokia 8, therefore, no app using compass will not work properly.
  • Is the compass bug fixed for those of you who received the February update?

    No :disappointed:

Totally agreed, no point using a phone which cannot pointing to correct direction.
  • hello
on maps this bug is driving me mad
but on waze it seems that the direction on the map is correct
I am the only one to see this ?

No, I see the same ...
... the reason for this behavior: If you move fast enough, the GPS data will be used instead of the compass data for the direction indicator. It depends on the app at which speed it switches ...

As far as I've seen, the compass works just fine, if you put the phone upside down (with the screen facing the ground). This looked strange to me, until I read "has to work correctly for users located in southern emisphere". HMD is focused on the Indian market, India is in the southern emisphere, it's possible that the compass only works in the southern emisphere (can anyone from India confirm?).
Now, as far as I am concerned, they don't actually need to fix this in the software. Just give me a flag in the developer options, which I can use to flip the compass. It'll be on me to know in which emisphere I am, and to check the flag as needed. Any way to make it work without rooting the device or using it in a weird position would be appreciated, even if it's just a workaround.

No, the compass isn't working fine - even not top down! Try standing on one point and turn around slowly by 90 / 180 / 270 / 360 degrees and watch the needle flip ...
  • It's getting started. Nokia Is releasing updates for Nokia 9 and forgets older devices. I was afraid of that. So fixing compass is probably not in sight. Nokia seems to be shutting down old devices from updating.

You can find the official update page of the system builds here:
    https://www.nokia.com/phones/en_int/security-updates

The page was updated on March 11 - and yes it was to inform that Nokia 9 has received its first update. But that update is the February maintenance and security update which was released on Monday March 4.

As you can see on that page, there have been monthly updates for Nokia 8 so far including lots of maintenance releases.
That doesn't necessarily mean that everybody has received these updates, though.
Of course it doesn't mean that these updates result in a bug free phone.
  • These are other things. When a buyer buys a hi-end phone, he needs a guarantee that the phone will not contain bugs like these (compass, bad camera app). The question is, if the Nokia is taking note to the fact that Pie broke compass. By the way, today is March 15th and my latest security update is from January 1st. In short, I am very disappointed that Nokia has chosen this way how to care for users of their products.

I would like to have an "HMD problem tracker" so that I can track the problem resolution.
  • I got my February Security update on 20 February, so perhaps the Pie fix will be along next weekend? I'm really tired of getting lost in the forest...

You could (for example) use "Locus Map" - there you can set the speed at which the app switches from compass to GPS and if you choose it low enough you won't get lost ...

@petrus it would be fairly easy for anyone to set one up in GitHub, GitLab, etc.

There are others even worse than me. They've completely lost their way with so many similar models and gimmicks instead of a smaller portfolio of well designed, developed and supported devices. F HMD global.
