@marsic I suggest trying another SIM card, preferably one that is no longer active or for another country.

Hi all, this is the reply from the Nokia Mobile Care

    >>>Thank you for contacting Nokia Mobile Care.

We are sorry to know about this inconveniences. In order to provide you with the best assistance, we will need some additional information regarding  the issue you are experiencing:

    - Since when are you having this issue? Was after a system update?
    - What steps have you performed in order to solve this issue?

In the meantime, we can suggest you a workaround to sort this out:

    1. Settings > apps & notifications > All apps >> 3 dot menu > reset app preferences > reset app.

    2. Settings >> Applications and notifications >> See all applications >> Camera >> Force stop. Finally, click on Storage >> Clear data and Clear cache.

    3. Please dial in your keypad *#*#372733#*#* and choose E-compass Test, G Sensor Test and Gyroscope test. Follow the steps and check if it works.

    4. Then, go to Settings > Applications and notifications > See all applications > 3 dots menu > Show system: In the list of apps look for:

    - Fused location > storage > Clear data and Clear cache
    - Location services > storage > Clear data and Clear cache
    - YGPS > storage > Clear data and Clear cache

After that, please do a Soft reset: Press the Power button and Volume UP button simultaneously for at least 10 seconds, release them when you feel the phone vibrate and you see "Powered by Android" on the screen. This is a safe and quick way to reboot your device, so no need to worry, you won’t lose or erase any data. Just keep in mind that the device should not be charging.

    5. Check if the issue persist in safe mode:

    - Press and hold the Power button.
    - In the window that will appear on the screen, select and hold the "Power off" option.
    - It will appear a new window called "Safe Mode". Then, press OK.

The device will restart in safe mode. An inscription about this will appear at the bottom left of the screen. After going into safe mode, use the device as usual. Check if the problem has disappeared. Remember that only preinstalled applications are available to you. If you want to go back to the normal mode, you just need to restart the device.

    6. Finally, please go to Settings > Google > Search, Assistant and Voice > Google Assistant > Voice match > Plus sign.

We hope the information above is useful for you. Please let us know if the previous processes worked. We will be here to continue assisting you.
    Best regards,
    Nokia Mobile Care<<<

I have tried accordingly, several times, the Compass now is like HIT & MISS, initially it is okay/accurate, minutes later after close and re-open the app, it is back to abnormal again... and normal again... And most of the time is NOT pointing the right direction. YGPS - I could not find the app.

For the OK Google - still not working for me.

Just want to share with you, hope you guys can test it out and see any successful case or not. Will email to Nokia again if this is failed on all of us here.

    Thank you

  • > As far as I've seen, the compass works just fine, if you put the phone upside down (with the screen facing the ground). This looked strange to me, until I read "has to work correctly for users located in southern emisphere". HMD is focused on the Indian market, India is in the southern emisphere, it's possible that the compass only works in the southern emisphere (can anyone from India confirm?).
    > Now, as far as I am concerned, they don't actually need to fix this in the software. Just give me a flag in the developer options, which I can use to flip the compass. It'll be on me to know in which emisphere I am, and to check the flag as needed. Any way to make it work without rooting the device or using it in a weird position would be appreciated, even if it's just a workaround.

It is not working in India as well, in fact the entire phone firmware is inverted, when i do a carrier video call, the video is also 180 degrees inverted.

All nokia needs to do is change the orientation parameters in the Build file, dont know why it is taking them so long
  • Class action lawsuit of Nokia. See the new discussion thread
  • I`m curious how will the Nokia solve the compass bug , while I have claimed it as broken product at the retail seller and I can see that my cell phone is now in the official service point. Maybe they have already some unofficial bug fix, but I hope they will provide me an option to request the full refund, unless they will state this is OK

Isn't there a limited period for returning a phone via the point of sale, or can you do it at any point within the warranty?
  • The rule used to be that the seller had the right to try fixing a product they had sold three times. The right to return goods in Denmark expires after 14 days and the seller decides if they want to offer such a right. I assume that Denmark being in the EU, the rule I found applies throughout the EU.
The old British Trade Descriptions Act of 1968 was the best. If a good didn't do what it was supposed to do, the seller had to replace it. Not so any more...
Forget the first three lines - this effing editor won't let delete them without sending a picture. @HMD_Laura: please find us a fix ...

That's a long script of famous HMD internal jokes that they've mistakenly transcripted to you (too). They keep making that mistake again and again, for some weird reason...

Hopefully your hopes are at a decently low level, otherwise you're in for a "treat", HMD flavour :/

    Me too,
They said this to me on the 30th January
    (Before I received January update)

"We are sorry about the inconvenience.

In this issue, we will escalate to the relevant department of Nokia. We would like to advise you to stay tuned for the next update.

Thank you for understanding. Wish you all the best!  "

    Still waiting.

I've mentioned before, they have quite a few issues with the Nokia 9, so any problems with any other models are going to be put to one side.
Just my opinion, I hope that I am wrong and we receive it soon.

Problem is, they always have new phones with issues they need fixing, and they always put Nokia 8 at the end of the list. Next month they are releasing Nokia 6.2 and maybe some other phones too. C-level buffoons have laid off bunch of people and now they have less engineers employed than in 2017 while having 7 times more phones to support.

I don't know if HMD has anything to do with the software development though, from my understanding that company "FIH Mobile" is responsible for their software.
Now, I'm wondering if that company works exclusively for HMD Global, or they're also providing outsourced work for the general market (in which case WTFF!)

From what I've read (and grasped) on Glassdoor, they've most likely laid off people from HMD itself, probably designers, help-desk (LoL...), technical advisors maybe, or delivery/logistics, marketing, stuff like that, not too technical per se.
But indeed, those reviews quite accurately describe what we the customers see from HMD...

@potemkin where did you read about the redundancies? I can't find any info about them. Nokiamob crew told me at MWC that the Eastern Europe department was being closed and that team were being made redundant, but apart from that I don't know about any redundancies.

@marsic FIH Mobile are the manufacturing partner for HMD, they do a lot of the engineering and prototyping as well. Evenwell are a company of theirs who I think are the main software integrator for HMD phones. FIH manufacture phones for many other brands but AFAIK they work closest with HMD, Sharp (which are owned by Foxconn, which also own FIH Mobile) and InFocus (I think abother brand of FIH Mobile's own smartphone business). I recently read somewhere that HMD's store app in China (where they don't have Google Play) was actually the same app as on Sharp phones in China, so there is a strong chance that other phones for which Evenwell are the software integrator also have the compass bug. Maybe all the ones with the same Snapdragon 835 chipset, but I haven't looked into this so I don't know.
