  • @madbilly do you have Nokia 8? If so, which update have you installed?

    Hi @cavva79, I have a Nokia 8, TA-1012, Android 8.1 with 1st December 2018 security patch, build number 00WW_4_88B_SP07 build number.

I can get the Android 9 update if I use an invalid SIM card, but since the compass and geotagging aren't working I have decided I don't want to update yet.

Out of interest, what do you disagree with in what I wrote before?
  • @madbilly I disagree that with 200€ now buying a Nokia 8 you get powerful phone.
Unluckily I personally think at full support of the company ( in this case hmd ) that gives to phone. Buying now a phone with just 1 year of security updates, and lack of communication (Android 9 Feb security update for Nokia 8 for example) is not worth.
The price of a device must contains also support warranty.
This means that this phone have no development team dedicated to its bug fixes. It is not like when I had my lovely nexus 5. 3 full year of support. No big issues.

I feel fed up with hmd cause of this missing support. I hope that hmd will learn not to forget any device in future.

By the way, how do you feel being stuck on dec sp?

A phone with a 835 chipset, 128GB storage and 6GB RAM isn't powerful? Er, no actually it is, very clearly powerful, still the joint-second most powerful phone made by HMD and easily one of the most powerful phones you can buy at that price, if not the most powerful.

That's the choice of the buyer. If I look at what other phone I could buy for the same price I can either have the guarantee of updates for longer with a lower spec or maybe as good a spec but from a company which will probably never give any updates at all, ever. FYI it's 16-17 months of updates still to come for the Nokia 8, not just 1 year.

I agree, but we're not talking about warranty here, we're talking about ongoing software maintenance, which should also be included in the price of the phone (and is, I'm sure).

You don't know that for certain. I agree that it certainly seems like there's nobody working on the Nokia 8 bugs but I think that the reason the March update has not been delivered is because they are including bug fixes with it. Comparing HMD to Google is not a fair comparison because Google did not sell the Nexus phones to make money, it sold them as a demonstration of what Android can do; I expect that Google was happy to sell them at a loss.
I feel fed up with hmd cause of this missing support. I hope that hmd will learn not to forget any device in future.
I completely agree, I find it very disappointing that HMD is not fixing bugs for older devices (or newer ones, sometimes).
By the way, how do you feel being stuck on dec sp?

I'm not "stuck" on the December update, I chose not to update to a buggy, broken Android 9 version. As I said, the compass and geotagging are broken, which for me are more important than a few security updates. My order of priorities for updates are 1) stability (all features working, 2) security and 3) new features. The January update is available for the 8 with Android 8.1 but for some reason it doesn't get offered for my phone, I would take it if it was. When the compass and geotagging are fixed, and if nothing else gets broken, then I will update to Android 9.

@madbilly Are you sure you can buy version of Nokia 8 with 128 GB storage and 6 GB RAM for only €200?

    I can't even find 64 GB/4 GB version for €200.

@potemkin Yes you're right, I can't find anything new and that cheap.

Sorry everyone, I must have got mixed up, please hit disagree - I deserve to lose a few points for that! How idiotic of me...
That's untrue, the Nokia 8 goes cheap, I got mine in the middle of December (aka, about 2 and a half months ago) for a mere £179 BRAND NEW (open box) with free one day shipping on ebay, and I cannot say I regret it, because who can complain about  835, 64GB of storage and 4GB of ram at that price?

@wiryfuture You were lucky. It's hard to find flagship phones for that kind of price and when you manage it's usually on ebay or similar sites and it rarely happens.
  • Nokia 7 plus is on march update, nokia 8 still on january . Great, is really great

I got mine 15 months ago. For 279 GBP . Open box new.
Why so cheap so soon after launch.
Tell you why.... All the promises of updated, camera app, updated glance, development into android one phone...etc etc etc. They knew that they were not able to do so. Or didn't want to.
Since I've had the phone they have broken more than they have fixed.

    Great specs though......

My mate and his missus paid £220 each brand new and sealed from john Lewis in December 2018, my wifes was £259 from John Lewis in August 2018 and mine was full whack in October 2017, again from John Lewis.
  • Month ago I bought n8 6/128gb version for ~250€ brand new incl. Shipping. I think it's bargain.
  • Ok I am mad because here in Czech republic I bought Nokia 8 4GB/64GB about a year back in sale for more than 500 euros (it was the lowest price available). So thats why I am angry about HMD Global support.

I'm pesonaly not angry for the security patch delay, this is the first time in my case; nor for the compass, it can happen, it had worked 'till a couple of months ago...I'm really upset for the camera, it works like the first day, from 30/10/2017, it works like crap in night conditions!!!

okay, it's lunch time, I'll be calm again after some food, sorry...
  • I have not received the March Security Update here in India.Anyone who got it?

I dont have february update and others dont have even pie and you want march update ?
  • All we can do is wait a complain, we have no power and are of no importance to HMD.
  • We want the March update because the February update did not fix the compass fault, which is kind of important to people who use their very expensive Nokia 8 to find their way! There are also other issues ...

Looking at the calendar, it better be the April update.

I am beginning to think a new pie release with the latest SP will be released given how fragmented the Nokia 8 user base is.
  • So we are skipping directly from january to march update in the next week ? Anyway i apreciate that someone from hmd is taking time to answer our questions. Thank you.
  • hmm okay but why did we never get the february update? nobody ever mentioned there being issues or anything and many users got it... btw might as well skip march and give us april SP at this point
