Hi all,

Short read: Check out and sign this petition 👍

        https://repair.eu/smartphones/

I'm sure that many of you, at some point, have had some electronic item break. Maybe it failed by itself, or maybe it broke due to your mistake, e.g. getting it wet or dropping it on the floor. When that happened, what did you do? If it was still under guarantee/warranty and the failure was not your fault then you probably sent it back to the manufacturer. Otherwise, are you technically minded and tried to fix the item yourself, or were you able to easily find a repair shop who could repair it for a reasonable price?

Neither? You had to recycle it and buy a new one?

Exactly, that's the problem - modern consumer electronics seem to be designed to be either not repairable at all or only repairable with special tools which normal people don't have. In addition, the information about the construction of the device, which parts do what and the availability of spare parts to buy, is often severely limited. Smartphones seem to be the worst example of this. Some manufacturers lead by a good example, e.g. Fairphone, but the vast majority require special tools and parts often cannot be obtained outside of authorised repair networks, at such high prices that repair is uneconomical - looking at you Apple 😡

HMD is no exception, AFAIK they don't make it easy for anyone (public or commercial) to get information on how to repair their devices or to get spare parts. In fact we have seen on this forum many many times where a device has failed within warranty and been sent to repair but it is considered unrepairable because the spare parts aren't available or it is uneconomic, e.g. Nokia 8 displays. The owner often gets replacement or some sort of refund, so may eventually be happy with the result, but the result is not a good one, because all of that energy and those materials made to use the phone are wasted.

If the EU implements right to repair legislation for smartphones and other consumer electronics it won't just benefit people in the EU. As the EU is one of the largest single markets for these devices vendors will have to comply with the legislation and this will influence their operations in other parts of the world, so potentially everyone will benefit from this right to repair. Even if there is no direct benefit, it will give citizens of other countries an example to show to their politicians to encourage them to do the same, or better.

By signing this petition you will send a signal that you want your smartphone to be repairable by you or a professional of your choice, not restricted by the vendor of your smartphone, be that HMD, Apple, Fairphone or anyone else.

Cheers 🙂

Hi all,

Let's talk about that other special camera on the 8.3 - the ultra-wide camera. At first I was amazed by its specs, but then later I learnt that this is because the launch video was a bit misleading about this... tut tut, naughty @juho 🤨

I heard 12MP 2.8um pixels, both of which are true but not together. The camera normally has 1.4um pixels and can use pixel-binning or some other sort of oversampling to reduce to 3MP camera with 2.8um pixels. A 3MP camera? Hardly anything to get excited about really.

The only glimmer of hope is that this isn't the standard quad-bayer pixel arrangement but is actually using a PureView style oversampling algorithm to go from 12MP to 3MP. We can hope 🤞

Actually one interesting thing about this ultra-wide camera is that the sensor is 16:9 ratio, which is unusual, but I suppose makes sense for a dedicated wide angle camera.

"Advanced" video EIS is mentioned on the datasheet, I wonder what is advanced about it? I'd rather have OIS, any day, because I don't want to lose any of the field of view from the ultra-wide camera I paid for.

ZEISS cinema capture and editor is interesting, I wonder what we will be able to do with that software. Maybe the capture is where the advanced EIS comes in. I'd quite like to have an easy to use video editor on my smartphone, I'm sure there are many available already but the processing takes ages on my x64 multicore desktop so I imagine it would take all day on a smartphone!

Your thoughts?

Cheers 🙂

Hi all,

So let's talk about that macro camera, what do you think? Have any of you used a smartphone dedicated macro camera before?

Whilst I like the idea, and I'm exactly the kind of person who will use that feature a lot, I'm worried that it will just be a gimmick. I think that the image from a 2MP sensor with a small lens will actually be lower quality than using the main camera and cropping the photo to manually "zoom" the photo. Okay, the composition of the photo, depth of field, etc won't be the same, but the detail probably will be less good. I read reviews of the Moto One Macro and a Xiaomi phone with this lens and they said pretty much the same thing.

Note that the minimum depth is 3.6cm, which is quite close (obviously) I wonder if the camera has an LED ring around it for illuminating the subject, otherwise lighting will be difficult.

Cheers 🙂

Hi all,

Grea things are afoot! 😃

As well as the promising progress of the right-to-repair movement, which I shared the petition for earlier, the EU itself is moving forward with ways to ensure that consumer electronics, including smartphones, are easier to repair overall.

A new standard has been agreed for "General methods for the assessment of the ability to repair, reuse and upgrade energy-related products", in other words - repairability scores.

Some of you might be familiar with iFixit, the website which provides information on the disassembly, repair and reassembly of smartphones and other electronic items. They were heavily involved in the development of this standard and found themselves fighting against many people in the electronics industry to get what many EU citizens consider to be the morally correct approach.

The industry's motives are fairly well known and no surprise - to be profitable and maximise return on investment for their shareholders, that's capitalism! 😆

Are HMD any different? As far as I can tell, no they are not. However, it would be unfair to identify any single manufacturer in this case, as I believe most take the same approach and when they see one vendor having greater success they tend to copy that approach. Hence why we see so many smartphones now which are very difficult to repair, a trend started by Apple and based on their success other vendors clearly think that this is a good business model! The same reason that repair information and spare parts cannot be obtained outside of authorised repair networks - a model which has brought Apple a lot of profits. I did say it would be unfair to identify any single manufacturer, but let's give "credit" to Apple for popularising this morally bankrupt approach 😉

HMD are in the same market as everyone else, they are selling smartphones and they need to sell as many for as large a profit margin as possible to satisfy their investors. If they make their phones last longer, or be easily repairable outside of their authorised service network, then they may* potentially lose revenue from resale, licensing fees or spare parts sales. In addition, some industrial designers would argue that they cannot design an easily repairable smartphone given current industry trends for aesthetics, and a repairable smartphone would not be aesthetically attractive enough to sell sufficient numbers. I think this is why HMD are selling so many glass sandwich phones, rather than the metal backed phones with easily replaceable batteries which many of us would prefer.

*I say may because this is a gamble, a balance of risk. I personally believe that a long term sustainable business model which encourages loyalty through product longevity and easy repairability is actually more attractive, however, I'm not an entrepreneur and not responsible for the billions of € of investment that HMD have been given 😉 HMD are targeting growth, and growth requires lots of sales, hence their strategy and approach to industrial design, in my opinion.

Some of HMD's devices are more repairable than others. The cheaper phones tend to have a less complicated construction and probably use off the shelf parts. Some actually do have easily replaceable batteries 😃 But the flagships, and mid-range devices, are sadly as unrepairable as the vast majority of smartphones one can buy.

The EU's intention seems to be that this repairability score will be displayed in the same way that energy efficiency scores are displayed - at the point of sale, next to the device. I've mentioned before that in France retailers are apparently obliged to show at the point of sale how long spare parts will be available for, and now there is an optional system for retailers to show durability and repairability at the point of sale, but I struggled to find examples. Fnac apparently do this, but I still struggle to find phones on their website with this information.

HMD business performance, via FIH Mobile report 😉

Hi all,

FIH Mobile have released their preliminary annual report for 2019 and inside it contains information about HMD's business. Why? Well, until May 2019 FIH Mobile were the sole ODM (original design manufacturer) of smartphones for HMD, and they remain the sole ODM for feature (non-touchscreen) phones. Since May 2019 HMD have sold phones made by a range of ODMs, not only FIH Mobile.

Also, FIH Mobile are one of HMD's major investors. When Microsoft sold the remains of Microsoft Mobile (which used to be Nokia's devices and services division, aka phones business) they sold most of it (~90%) to FIH Mobile, and the rest to HMD. HMD have the Nokia brand licence and part of their business model was to partner with FIH Mobile who would make the phones for HMD to sell. FIH Mobile investing in HMD was a key part of that partnership, and it remains a key investment for FIH Mobile even if they are no longer HMD's sole ODM.

So, what's new in this report? Well, actually not much. The date of May 2019 for HMD to changeover to the multi-ODM strategy is new I think. However, FIH Mobile continued to make all smartphones "until the end of their lifecycle", which means that they didn't just stop in May 2019. For example the 8.1 remained in production until later in 2019 and maybe other models did as well. The report states that by the end of 2019 almost all of HMD's smartphones were made by ODM's other than FIH Mobile - I think that the 9 PureView is the only smartphone still made by FIH Mobile, although all non-touchscreen phones are still made by FIH Mobile. It appears from the report that the only smartphones which HMD are still making are profitable, which means that - against the odds! - the 9PV is profitable for FIH Mobile (I presume for HMD as well, otherwise they wouldn't still try to see it, one year after its release). 😃

Apparently the change to multi-ODM has been successful for HMD and HMD were apparently profitable for the first time in the final quarter of 2019. However, HMD are currently going through a series B funding round (it means the third time they've had funding; second time is A and first time is "startup phase") which actually started almost a year ago, and HMD hope to have it secured before end of June this year. This is important as it strengthen's HMD's balance sheet and makes them more credit-worthy, meaning they can get better payment terms from their suppliers which gives them more flexibility. Unfortunately I suspect that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is causing some issues to both this investment round and HMD's cashflow and relationship with suppliers, so for HMD's sake let's hope that they sail through these rough waters without serious financial problems. 🤞

More relevant to us as consumers and followers of the journey of Nokia phones is that FIH Mobile report that they think that HMD's promise of always up-to-date software is unique.. however we know that it isn't as there are other Android One phones, so I think that they maybe just chose the wrong word 😉 Interestingly, they say that they think in future smartphone innovation will be less on hardware and more on software, which I am pleased to read however HMD appear to be interpreting this to mean that they should continue to focus on "pure" aka beige Android rather than providing new and unique software experiences, i.e. that Nokia feeling. Oddly, FIH Mobile think that consumers interested in privacy like the beige Android approach, but these must be the kind of consumers who think that giving all their data to Google is fine for their privacy... 😕

HMD is apparently doing very well with the enterprise market and they have done some significant deals. Enterprises apparently do like the beige Android approach, which I think is understandable and fine for them. But I hope that HMD could start to provide some consumer-focused software which is an optional installation alongside the Android One approach.

Finally, it's worth noting that the report says that although a large number of people may not yet want to upgrade to 5G phones because there is not enough network coverage yet, the report also says that some people may not buy a 4G phone because they're waiting for more capable 5G phones to become available! Now we understand the vendor mentality of pushing their 5G phones, they want to make sure that they have something that people will buy, even if the coverage isn't there yet. This makes the new 8.3 5G look quite attractive then, so long as it comes to market before competitors also release models with as wide a range of frequency support.

If you're interested check out the report yourself and tell us if you see anything else interesting and what you think of the above.

Cheers 🙂

Just to rub it in my mates Nokia 7 Plus (which i recommended) has just been swapped for a new Samsung A50 as the HMD phone (surprise surprise) became unrepairable with a failed charging port.

Anyway i have bought the missus a Moto G8 Plus so i have no reason to visit the Nokia forums at all now but just wanted to say goodbye to you both.

I am extremely disappointed with the pricing of the Nokia 8.3 it should have been 450-500$ but it's priced at a stupid 650$ that too for the base variant, while other Chinese companies like Xiaomi are launching at a price of 350$ how can Nokia be this stupid and even if they had to price it this High they should have used the SD865 because the SD 765 is very poor and weak processor.... I had hight hopes for nokia but I think they are going in the wrong way and I have been a loyal consumer to Nokia but now I think I have to change Nokia because of their stupid pricing
